Accidents happen, are you prepared?
Accidents happen, especially when pets are involved. (Remember the squished poodle that required CPR during the holidays?) Now the Red Cross even offers pet first aid courses, along with the Atlanta Humane Society. I’ve lived through a pet emergency, have you? Usually, that’s the only way folks know what to have on hand for future mishaps.
I now keep an emergency 24-hour vet’s number on my refrigerator. I also can speed dial friends who know a lot about pets. But it may be time to build a resource list. What first aid gear should every pet owner have in the house? And what websites do you have bookmarked as resources for emergencies? Let’s start building a list.
Also note:
- • Check out Sandy’s Pet Dish column. This week she celebrates good Samaritans who helped Bear find safety — and home.
- • Meet George! He’s ready for a forever home.
- • Don’t miss the latest Mutt-minster ‘08 photos.

I did pet first aid/CPR twice, the first time around 6 month ago when I got certified, the second time just a week ago at the NAPPS (National Assosiation of Professional Pet Sitters) converence in Orlando. You will get a comprehensive list of items needed in your home for a possible pet emergency. I would encurage every pet owner to join a class. It is fun and you will meet lots of other pet lovers who care the same way about their pets. You can either find a class at www.PetTech.net or with the American Red Cross. Oh by the way, both will give you a book when you finish class so you can keep your knowlede always up to date.

After my Pommie had an accident about a year and a half ago, I do now! Something spooked him and he ended up falling down the steps from our deck onto the small concrete slab below. My husband freaked out and was afraid to pick Max up as he was having convulsions. While wrapped up in a bed sheet, I picked him up and continued to talk to him. It was so scary. I had never seen anything like it. He was shaking violently, and looked as if her were blinded. His eyes were totally bulging from his head, but I just kept rocking him and talking to him. We had to take him to the Emergency Vet that was about 30 minutes away. As we continued our ride, he began to come back around to his normal self. He ended up being diagnosed with a concussion and I took him to work with me so that I could make sure that he was ok for the remainder of the day.
Needless to say, the emergency vet info is in my wallet, and Max now has pet insurance. I didn’t know about the Pet CPR classes. I will definately look into that. I’m sure that it is very interesting. Thanks for the article.

I had to use this twice when Cinnamon was a puppy - she got into prescription medicines twice and the Georgia Poison Center was more than helpful each time. Part of their webpage is specific to pets too - http://gpc.dhr.georgia.gov/portal/site/DHR-GPC/

Phyllis, human medications are the number one cause of poisonings, according to the ASPCA poison hotline. Then come insecticides, plants, pest baits and cleaning products.
I went to the pet first aid class, and learned that hydrogen peroxide can be used to make a pet throw up. And I always thought mouth-to-snout CPR would involve blowing in the mouth, but you actually seal the mouth and blow in the nose. I plan to do a pet first aid kit now, with items like a strip of felt for a muzzle, gauze pads, paint stirrers for splints, gauze wrap and other items. It was a pretty eye-opening class. Here’s a link to my article.
