Introducing Loni!

Name that dog Well, you guys really came through in the name department. Loni won the name competition. Thanks for your input.Loni, our newest addition has been in the house two weeks now, so she (and we) need it!At least she’s getting acclimated to us and our other dogs. The litter box training is still a work in progress. Loni peed on a pink satin pillow yesterday. But we will tough it out. I really wanted to get another dog because Mini, my oldest dog, just doesn’t play much any more. But Miles, at 4, really wants to play. He was so frustrated that Mini wouldn’t play. The first night I brought our new girl home, Miles was wild with excitement. But on the second day, she started nipping at the back of his legs in play. Now, Miles is the biggest wimp on the face of the planet. He immediately ran away to the basement and wouldn’t come back upstairs. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep her because Miles was now afraid of our new girl. But they’ve kind of worked out a relationship.Loni’s figured out if she bites him, he won’t play, so she doesn’t do it much anymore. And now, even if she nips a bit, he doesn’t run away. They’re wrestling and playing tuggy with toys. Mini even gets involved now and then (although mostly it’s her standing there and barking at them like “Knock it off, you stupid kids!”)How has it worked introducing new pets, be it dogs, cats or birds, into your home? Any tips or tricks that have worked to get them to bond? I really want them all to be friends.

I recently introduced a feisty little puppy to my household of three cats…he’s one-third their size (and will stay that way) but he absolutely is the Alpha!!! He’s actually brought some level of fairness into the home because my two smaller kitties had been terrorizing the big kitty and now the pup and the big kitty have formed an alliance and the pup is terrorizing the two smaller kitties! Justice at last! They actually all get along pretty well…BTW, I like Ginger!!!!

Sandra, Miles used to torment Mini because she wouldn’t play. Now this girl torments him. Seems like turnabout is fair play!

Having introduced many cats and dogs into my household, I will say that you are wise to let them work out the hiearchy - especially sinceno blood has been shed!). I alway recommend introducing them in a neutral zone - or at least outside in the yard vs the house. That way they can meet and snif without as much territory issues coming into play. But you are past that stage.

Keep allowing them to set up the boundaries, steping in only when one gets too rough with one of the others. You are the ALPHA (or should be) and alpha’s don’t “bother” insignificant others unless…then be the alpha and put your foot down (so to speek) and put a stop to the inappriopriate behavior.

But, all in all, it sounds like it’s settling in well. Just remmber to spread the attention around so that no one feels left out. Mini will get use to their rough housing and should join in when she feels like it and jsut ignore it when she doesn’t. Perhaps you can sit and cuddle with her and enjoy the show. My oldest sits and observes the others playing, joining in when he wants (three girls that like to harass him). But then he’s the one in charge of saying enough is enough when it gets to rough - and they are are all twice his size!

I vote for “Ginger” as a good call name.

We got a puppy about a year ago, and let me tell you she moved right on in, with a list of new rules……

We have an 8 year old yellow lab, and when she met the puppy, it was like they were mom and pup. The puppy just loves the lab. She also plays with our two cats.

When we are outside, and it’s time to come in, and the cats are outside with us, the pup runs as fast as she can, and “rolls” the cats, and herds them into the house. Yes Virginia, you can herd cats……

If the cats are on the deck, and one of them jumps off (no stairs), she runs out and barks, and barks, to alert one of us that a cat has bailed…….then she runs outside with us and rolls it…….

    Too cute…….

Oh, and I like the name Ginger for your new puppy. It just seems to fit perfectly…….

I like the name Ginger, my daughter has a boxer named Ginger and when her sons were younger they could not say Ginger so they said Gin-ge. The name has stuck and now some of us still call her Gin-ge.

I have an older Boxer mix. My son brought me a young Shar Pei who happened to be the fallout of a doomed romance. The Shar Pei, being raised as a total thug, picked at the older dog endlessly for about three weeks. They are now buds. The Shar Pei keeps the older dog on his toes.

I am voting for Ginger, like GA Girl we also call our chow mix,Ginger “Gin-Ge”. Of course we have a Scruffy (pikingnese), Jackson (black lab), and a Ramsey (black lab)our newest addition by way of adoption. We also had a Dixie (siberian), but we lost her yesterday. There is never a dull moment in our home!

Dawg Lover, sorry for your loss. I lost Whitley 20 months ago, and I just found the strength to get another dog again. Course, once this little gal was in my arms, there was no question.

So far Loni is winning in her naming, but Taffy is a close second. It’ll end soon, so let me know what name you like by voting in the poll on the home page. I’m excited we’ll finally be able to start calling her by her real name this weekend!

    Intros can be tricky.

For my cat, I just let the new one loose and they’ve worked it out. No major bloodshed. My older cat I refer to as my “autistic” cat as he is very set in his ways, and when thrown off the normal schedule he follows me around the house meowing until I get back “on track”. lol

For dogs, a walk first thing helps to make the pack. Whoever is to be the leader (usually the oldest/ biggest &/or currently the leader) then a clear 2nd, 3rd, etc.

This suggestion is from a dog trainer I know.

Looks more like a rat in dog’s clothing- why not get a real dog like a German Shepard!
