Was your pet in the wedding?

Dogs in the wedding When I got married, I had my cat, Lily, and a biting bird named Gizmo. And I feel safe in saying neither would have wanted to attend the big day. But now that I have dogs, too, I’m so jealous of people who can include their pets in their weddings.

I love the little tuxedos and “party dresses” for dogs and more sociable birds. And I’ve seen the little ring pillows you can tie to your dog’s collar. Recently I saw this fabulous “Pet Petal Cart” that you hitch to your dog and it scatters flower petals as the pup walks down the aisle (finally, something that can “out-cute” those toddlers in the wedding). So let me live vicariously. Did you include your pets in your wedding? Tell me about it. And how did it work out? If you have pictures, send them today! Check out a few photos submitted so far.

Our two dachschunds were in our wedding. They were in tuxedo’s and were pulled down the aisle in a wagon decorated with lace and flowers. Once they reached the front, they sat with my mother during the ceremony. They did not make a sound and they loved the attention!

Friends of ours included their horses in the wedding…. One dressed as a groom and one as a bride.

Our dog was our ring bearer. He wore a bow tie and stood with the bridal party during the ceremony. He was also included in the wedding party photos and listed in the program. All the guests thought it was very cool.

A wedding is a sacred event. Animals are not on an equality with humans. They should be kept in their proper place, which precludes weddings. They are to be enjoyed and appreciated and not considered “people.” Nevertheless, animal lovers will do as the please at their private gatherings. Thus, I would want to be informed of any such ocassion that includes animals so that I could gracefully decline.

my wife and I were married in a beautiful outdoor park. There was a gorgeous cock-a-teal in a large cage about 20 feet from the ceremony. Our wedding was interrupted about 10 times by the cock-a-teal screaming HELP! HELP! Maybe he was trying to tell me something. lol

Although I love my two dogs very much, I have to agree with Edward. Having pets at a wedding is too over the top.

I’d rather have my dogs at my wedding that some-one’s bad mannered kid. My dogs are much better behaved than any kids I know or see out in public.

My My Tonya, I’ve never seen kids that would pee on car tires, smell each others butts, and lick their private parts in public. Man you must see some really weird kids where you’re from. Lets see choosing dogs above kids, you wouldn’t by chance be from India would you?

Well, I see it only took 4 hours before it degenerated into “my pets are way better than your bratty kids”. Way to go Tonya.

    crackmeup,

Peeing, sniffing and licking are all (key word here folks:) QUIET activities that a dog could do and unless someone was busy watching the dog instead of the wedding, no one would be the wiser. A crying baby or bad @$$ children are a completely different story. Let’s not forget the old adage, as sometimes it is true: “Children should be seen and not heard.”

My dog was at my wedding (a Boston Terrier - so she was already in formal attire) & so were my husbands kids & my then middle-school-age sisters - you know they were all well-behaved - almost like it was expected of them. Let’s not forget that we were all kids once & I have seen adults behave very poorly at weddings too - it must have something to do with training & breeding for both dogs & children!

People seem to be taking sides here — I think it really depends on the type of wedding. It’s probably controversial in a fancy church wedding with all the trimmings. But I think it’s very appropriate in an outside wedding, especially if the couple is passionate about nature and sees animals as an extension of family. That said, I think my cats would rather stay home.

It is tacky. Throw in a bucket of KFC chicken & a beer keg for the reception while you are at it.

If a couple wants to denigrate their sacred ceremony, then it is their choice, but they will be forever remembered as hicks.

Let’s not forget that weddings are designed by and for the bride and groom. As a guest, you attend to honor the couple, not their guests!

To each their own, as Erin said the wedding is for the bride and groom. If they choose to have their pet in the wedding, so be it, whom am I to judge. It adds to the uniqueness of the special day for the bride and groom. On the other hand if they choose to not inclued their pet, it is their choice.

As to the judgement of some here, it must be nice to think you have all the answers and the right to judge others with your opinions.

I didn’t have mine in my wedding, nor have I been to a wedding where pets were included. It sounds like a lovely idea if you can get the dog, or whatever pet you like, to behave. That being said, I am a mother and would like it if everyone could refrain from assuming that everyones kids are brats. Such an assumption would be like me assuming that your dog is a slobbering flea bag. Act like the adults you are, don’t get carried away just because you’re behind a computer.

I was married outdoors on my parents farm. It was not a formal affair. Our chocolate lab was included in our simple ceremony. Really, the choice is up to the bride and groom. It doesn’t matter what guests think since it isn’t THEIR wedding. A few relatives didn’t think I should include my morbidly obese sister-in-law, but that was my choice, NOT theirs. I love her. I love my husband. I love our dog. It was a happy day and a blessed occasion for us all.

I would love to go to a wedding that had animals in it - Edward, it’s the vows that are sacred, a wedding is a celebration. And Kevin & Beth, it would be better than having some bozo stick a video camera and a microphone in my face while everyone is doing that stupid “traditional” chicken dance - now that’s the epitome of tacky.

Married life is wonderful, messy, joyous, and unpredictable — a lot like living with pets. What’s so bad about celebrating the start of that new life with your beloved animals at your side? It sounds sacred in my book. Our first dog wasn’t in the ceremony, but we did sign her adoption papers and pick her up from the county shelter the very next day. She’s our anniversary girl. :-)

I think that gay pets should not be allowed, or at least overtly gay pets.

Animals are fine as long they do not have the reputation of snarfling their gonads at will.

No, pet’s don’t belong at the wedding. But it’s a free country.

But I offer a thought on one tangent that I see in these responses. I have become unwilling to further accept the self-indulgent baloney of people equating their pets with children.

I have had dogs that were so loving an important to me that I mourn them 20 years after losing them.

But even my favorite dog was not really my “girl.” Her value or importance, or the sacrifice I owed her, could not nor never be equated with that of my daughters.
Ok, some “pet people” don’t have the patience to deal with poorly raised children. While I share their pain when I have to endure poorly raised kids (I have to do that more often than I care), even those poorly raised kids of others deserve ever bit of love and care that I and my society and country can give them.

A society that disdains its collective sons and daughters for dogs, cats or horses has utterly lost its moorings. A person who would choose to leave a million bucks to a dog rather than to, let’s say, an orphanage, is simply sick.

I cannot abide reading some people’s dismissive views of those who have chosen to procreate. Sit in your coffee houses, enjoy your deep chats with other intellectuals who similarly laugh at the “breeders,” who endure Ford vans instead of driving something cooler. Spend great times with your significant other and think only of yourselves if you choose.

But just be glad that somebody else chose to give life to those with whom you now share yours: who wiped their noses when they were sick, and gave up other pleasures for the sake of not just their future, their kids’ futures, but yours as well.

Your wedding should be representative of who you are. So if it’s your day, celebrate it as you wish!
BUMP others’ expectations of what they think is acceptable. When they’re paying, they’re can do what suits them!
Last time I checked, this is AMERICA…

Petdish, am I crazy or did your bird named Gizmo recently pass away?

    Back on topic:

I would gladly have pets at my wedding if i ever get married. Any you non pet people who have screaming little brats who cant behave, dont worry. I WONT be inviting you to my wedding. You arent the type of people i would allow myself to associate with anyway. Now go on….fly somewhere so you can get kicked off the flight by your snot nosed, screaming brats who cant stay seated for the flight.

We have been chastised there Steve. We get it.

We “breeders” won’t expect an invitation to your wedding, if you have one. Your pets can stand in for you. And of course, no brats will trouble you there.

We will be ok though. We need you and your ilk less than you need us. Trust me.

But 30 years from now, when you arteries clog up, or your get in a terrible car wreck, and you dial 911, it won’t be a cockatoo , or a German Shepherd, that comes to your aid. It won’t be a fat kitty cat that places an oxygen mask over your face and tells you all will be ok, and takes you to be saved at the nearest hospital.

It will be one of today’s “brats” that you despise along with their hardworking parents. All grown up and being decent men or women. And they will be glad to do it for you.
