Metro Atlanta kids help pets

Cute kids help dogs My latest Pet Dish column is about kids helping animals. The stories range from two Milton boys who won a magazine contest - and $5,000 - for their rescue group, to a 10-year-old girl who sold rocks to classmates to earn $200 for the group she volunteers for. Kids just love animals, and many want to help them. We wish we could get all the great stories we hear about kids into the column.

Do you know of any kids in your neighborhood who not only love pets, but actually have helped them? Submit your story as a comment. Our favorite will win an age-appropriate book.

MORE PET NEWS:

  • • AARF (Atlanta Animal Rescue Friends) is raffling off 75 tickets for $50 each, with the winner getting $1,000. But so far they’ve only sold 22 tickets. The drawing is Saturday night. If you’d like a shot at the cash (it’ll be paid out, no matter how many tickets they sell), or just want to help out, buy one. The money is needed so they can start taking in needy animals again.

  • • Pet Vent: We asked cat owners if they would feed live mice to their pets. Here’s Holsen’s answer:
My Samantha wouldn’t go near a mouse unless he was skinned and grilled with garlic and butter. And I’m not up to the preparation.
  • We have a new UGA mascot! Savannah lawyer Sonny Seiler, whose family has overseen the selection and care of the University of Georgia’s white English bulldog mascots since 1956, announced on Friday that Uga VII has been anointed.
