Would you break the law to save a pet?
A lot of people are talking about an incident in Texas where a young couple, rushing their dying dog to a veterinarian, was stopped by a police officer (see the video). The man was driving 100 miles per hour while talking on his cell phone with the vet’s office. When stopped late at night, the officer repeatedly yelled at the hysterical driver, and at one point told him “It’s only a dog, you can get another one.”
The dog, a teacup poodle named Missy, died as the couple waited 20 minutes for the officer to write a ticket. The couple believes the officer took that long on purpose. The police say the driver was a menace. What do you think? Should the police have detained him? Should they have gotten the dog to the vet and then written the ticket? Or should the man have driven the speed limit?

I was totally outraged! If it were me, I would have done the same thing - only - I wouldn’t have stopped until I reached the vet. I know speeding was dangerous and the driver really should have slowed down some, but if it was your child, what would you have done? To most of us - our pets are out children. I think the Texas officer should have been fired.

I would do a lot to save my dog, but driving 100 mph is unreasonable. You can’t jeopardize people’s lives. So sad about their pet. I hope the officer was disciplined for being such a pig. Twenty minutes to write a ticket under the circumstances was cruel.

That’s like asking me if I would break the law to save any human member of my family. I would ABSOLUTELY do so for the four-legged family members, as well! The well-being of my dogs and cats is as precious to me, as that of a human child.
I appreciate what police officers do for us every day. There are many officers who care for dogs and their canine partners. The officer, who handled the situation with the Texas couple so poorly, is obviously the exception. He is ignorant and insensitive. I only hope he will eventually understand what he has made this poor couple endure emotionally.

The copy should be the one punished here. This story makes me so sad. I watched the video in horror. I would have not stopped for the cop at all. I would have jsut continued driving to the vet and told the police when i got there what was going on after the vets had my dog in thier hands. The cop should be fired over this and definitly sued. Right now he should be thinking “it’s only a job, I can get another one” and after this he should have to.

On August 3rd I noticed a small dog locked in a black car with the windows up in full sun in the parking lot of the DeKalb Farmers Market. It was 90+ degrees and very humid. I asked security to call out the license plate over the loud system. They wouldn’t. Told me instead to call 911, which I did. 15 minutes later, disinterested security staff finally announced license number, spoke to the woman, but told her that her lights were on. 30 minutes after I called 911 (no police or animal control were able to show up) the woman finally came out, claiming dog was fine (was clearly suffering from heat stroke). Security said not a word to her and let her leave. I asked 911 to have animal control call me so I could file a report. No call. I filed a written report on Aug. 4. No response. Dog was hardly moving after 30 minutes and I was seconds away from breaking the wnidow in full view of 4 security officers all just staring at the car, chuckling and say, “gee, the dog looks like its stroking out.” What do you do in a situation like that? I was furious. Still am. But its hard enough for authorities to respond to all the human suffering in our community, much less the animals (tight budgets, limited resources). And there will always be those who do not value the life of an animal. Its a hard, but simple, fact. It would be nice if someone could fund a lawsuit on behalf of that couple.

the cop was sadistic and deserves punishment. those poor people… sure write ‘em a ticket - AFTER they get to vet… because the pet owners didn’t have emergency lights, sirens, etc. they were indeed a danger on the roads.. and before anyone sez I’m heartless - yes, I am a veteran of my own mad dash to the vet when my cat’s leg was wrenched off by a car. I was hysterical… and to this day I am very grateful to my neighbor who drove. I don’t know how I could have operated a car while so deep in shock.

A life is a life! As Susan said so well … to some our pets are our children. I hate the police for this very reason. There was a time when they would have helped rather than deliberately delay someone. Bad police!…Bad!

I wouldn’t expect anything less out of a Texas Police Officer. Ever been there? It’s pretty scary!

Barb, I would’ve broken the window and said “whoopsy, look at that, I just slipped and the window broke!” I wouldn’t mind going to jail for that. I’d love to see the woman show up in court having to face animal cruelty charges if she wanted to fight over the window.
That woman didn’t deserve to have a dog. Some people think of pets as accessories more than living beings. Poor thing.
And yes, I’ve driven 95 mph to get my dog to the emergency vet, but I was on I-85 so I was basically keeping up with traffic.
I didn’t and won’t watch the video, but I hope the cop gets fired or forced to work for the animal cruelty unit for a while to see what uncaring folks do to animals so he can decide if he’s on that side, or on the side of caring about living creatures.

I like my dog and I like my cat,but a 100 miles per hour trip to the vet is out of the question.Ambulances taking patients to hosptals don’t travel 100 miles per hour. That speed is not safe for anyone on the highway.

YES! I would break windows and drive as fast as possible to save an animal. My dogs are my children and the dogs I save will join my family as well.

100 mph while talking on a cell, so he was risking human lives for a dog. He probably should have been locked up, anyone who seriously equates pets to humans, needs some help

Not taking up for the officer at all, but he is right, they can get another dog. It is sad that we live in a country where there are 4 times as many animal shelters than battered women shelters. ANIMALS ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS. Would you people, given the choice, save your pet or another human being? I wonder where society has gotten to giving animals the same rights as human beings.

Well, that police officer should be FIRED!!!! If it were me in that situation I don’t think I would have pulled over. I probably would have called 911 and explained my situation and told them the officer can follow me to the vet office and once my dog had been taken back, then we could have handled the problem. If they did not like that then they would just have to do what they had to because my dog is like my child and NOTHING would stop me from getting him emergency help!!!

I understand the man was upset but driving 100mph AND not pulling over was a very stupid thing to do. But, the police should have assisted this family by taking the dog to the vet. He even points out that several squad cars were on the scene. Couldn’t one of them have taken the passenger and the dog to where they needed to go? This officer and the others who didn’t help out and didn’t speack up should be reprimanded in some way. “To Protect And Serve”. Yeah right.

Oftentimes we lose sight of what is most important in life. Our pets are like family members to us. However, in an emergency situation we must take care not to further injure the victim, or innocent bystanders. By driving wrecklessly 100 mph, other people including the close family members were put at risk. The police officer may have displayed malice towards them for the very reason I stated above. To break the law to save another is a personal choice. The possibility of injuring, endangering, or killing ourselves and others during the process should be considered before making the decision.

I can understand the driver speeding, but 100mph is quite high. The police officer sounds like a heartless bast–d. I have 6 cats, and don’t even think of messing with any of them. Some people just don’t understand that our pets are our family, and I tend to love my animals more than some people I know. I think that police officers are on too much of a power trip and need to be brought back to reality. This one certainly does.

What if the dog had been a police dog? What would the policeman have done then? Do you think the approach would have been different? Most definitely!
Request a comment be removed
Aside from the officer being callous and not handling the situation well, neither did the driver.
No person should be driving at 100 mph pet or otherwise. Even an emergency response vehicle is not allowed to drive in excess of 10mph over the posted limit and in doing so must have red lights and siren in effect. The law states must drive with due regard.
This person put many lives at risk, His, his girlfriends and every other person on the road. Yes it could have been dealt with better, by both parties.
Slow down folks, speed kills. I know I package the injured and the dead. Usually it is innocent bystanders not involved in the speeding vehicle that end up dead.
Sorry the dog is dead but I side with the cop, you can’t have a hysterical person doing in excess of 100 mph, even if it was your child. Heck it is a mini van not even designed to do 100 mph,

Get the pet to the Vet!!! I experienced the same thing, being pulled over for speeding and getting the same type of reaction, as well as him purposely delaying me from arriving at the emergency clinic, However my pet lived.

Gee, I thought the only acceptable reason for going 100 mph was for an officer to get off work or to his dinner break on time.
Most cops I see routinely drive 20, 30, 40 mph over the speed limit. Talk about thinking you’re above the law!

Yes I would break the law to get my dogs to the vet to save their lives. I think the Texas Police officer was taking too long on purpose which caused the dog to die. I hope he has nightmares the rest of his life! It is against the law to hurt animals and what he did was cruel and hateful…he might as well killed the dog hisself….

I don’t think I would drive 100mph, but I would get my dog to the vet. The officer in this case, could have helped them by giving them an escort, then ticketed the guy for the speeding. I watched the video and that cop seems like MANY others that I have dealt with…Smart asses and witha chip on his shoulder.

Most of you people are insane. You would seriously risk HUMAN life to save a DOG???? Wow.

I’m going to question the basis of 100mph being dangerous. Unusual, yes, but dangerous? I’d say it depends on the road, the car, and the driver. I routinely ran 80-85 on 285 for 30+ yrs. People got pulled over A LOT for 100+mph. And that’s usually the inexperienced teens and mid-lifers. Cop should have offered to escort, then given the ticket. And yes, 120mph once.

I feel sorry for his loss, and having dealt with manic depressives, I know how they can get, but 100+ mph and not initially stopping for a cop at nearly 1 a.m.? That’s ridiculous — this was an extremely dangerous incident. Heck, he’s lucky he didn’t wreck that top-heavy SUV while being freaked-out, yapping on a cell-phone, and doing 100+ mph.
People often have no clue about time/speed/distance. Exactly how far away was the vet that 100 mph was going to make that much of a difference? Even if it were ten miles to an emergency vet, the difference in 50 mph and 100 would have only been six minutes, and 75 and 100 would have only been three minutes. I doubt he would have been stopped for 75!
Additionally, was the girl incapable of using the phone?

If I was rushing a sick dog to the vet I wouldn’t stop for the cop till I got to the vet’s and had my animal taken care of. Then if he wanted to give me a hard time I would give him a “Glasgow Kiss” and he could go ahead and throw me in the slammer. Hope those people sue the hell out of the s.o.b.

100 miles/hr is not that fast in many places (interstate, freeways, etc) and sometimes is simply flowing with traffic, especially in major citiies. Other places/times maybe 100 MPH would be too dangerous. The cop is a public servant for the public as well as those he/she pulls over. That cop should have ’served’ that couple and followed them to the vet. There is ALWAYS time to write a simple ticket, LATER. That cop was sadistic and cruel. He/she had their priorities very misplaced.
Request a comment be removed
I was shocked. For most people, the pets are a member of the family. I’ve had a toy poodle for 8 years. I wouldnt give it a second thought if my dog needed medical attention. The officer should have had more empathy with the couple. He could have easily followed them to write the ticket or mailed it to them.

100 MPH, talking on cell phone, hyterical. Yup, great combination for killing innocent PEOPLE. Idiot should be locked up.

The cop should at least be diciplined for his attitude and apologize to Missy’s owners and all who suffer from Bi-poler disorders. At most he should face animal cruelty charges and monetary compensation to the owners. The owners should pay the speeding ticket; should have driven more responsibly (to the public), and should not have stopped until arriving at the clinic.
By the way, I don’t even like pets and strongly disagree with laws treating them as if human. What would have happened if that driver had run-over and killed a canine “officer”? We have a great deal of “corrections” to do.

The cop should be removed from duty and the family should sue the heck out of the cop, and the department.

I have broken the law to save my dog and would do it again. My Brittany was bitten by a large Diamondback Rattlesnake when she was a small puppy. I drove as close to 100mph as I my truck would go to make sure she got the anti-venom from the vet 50 miles away. This guy should have gotten to the vet and laid on the horn, of course he would have gone to jail but he could have sorted things out while his dog got the proper care. I would have expected the other officer to take the girl and the dog to the vet in the cruiser while the rude cop and the driver sorted things out. I belive if you harm a K9 police dog you will be charged as if you harmed an actual human officer, maybe he can use that info as precident when he sues the heck out of the police department.

Did anyone watch the video? That guy was in no condition to drive. I have loved all of my dogs too, but the cop was right to keep the guy off the road. If the police had let this guy go and then the guy hit someone else, imagine the outcry. As far as the officer taking 20 minutes to write a ticket, have you ever had a ticket that took less than 20 minutes?
The officer could have shown more compassion once he figured out what the situation was. At the beginning at least, the officer was just trying to assess the situation without unnecessarily putting his own life at risk. Cops never know what they are going to find when they pull a car over, so they have to be cautious.
I cannot believe that I am defending the police here, but he probably wrote the ticket at the scene to give the guy a chance to calm himself down enough to safely drive. In the end, a dog isn’t worth a human life.

Yes I would go 100 mph to save my Dogs. Yes I would save my Dog over a human. And to Firemedic, I was a pathologist. I saw what can happen at high speeds. But my “babies” are worth the risk.
People come and go, but your dog is with you till the end.
I feed my dogs before myself, they receive medical care before me. Dogs cannot do it for themselves. They depend on us for their health and well being. That policeman committed animal cruelty. They have strict laws for that in Texas. Lets see if anyone follows up on that.
He should be fired and blackballed from all law enforcement.

Bottomline is they were both in the wrong. 100 mph is beyond reckless and saying you are trying to save a life does not make it okay to jeopardize others. Even ambulances do not drive that fast with human patients who are in critical condition.
However, the police officer could have used better judgment. A better choice for him would have been to lead the car at a safer speed to the destination, and once the dog was being treated, THEN issue the citation (although a ticket was really a light sentence - at those speeds the officer could have justifiably arrested the driver).

THE COP SHOULD HAVE ARRESTED THE MAN IMMEDIATELY. THATS THE PROTECT PART. THEN HE SHOULD HAVE PLACED THE DOG IN HIS CAR AS WELL AND TAKEN IT TO THE VET. THEN TAKEN THE MAN TO JAIL.

So sad how we value the lives of pets over those of human beings. Personally hate pets, dogs especially, and would NOT risk human life by driving 100 miles per hour while talking on a cell phone. RU frickin’ kidding me!! Any other conversation that included 100 MPH along with a cell phone and I’d be incarcerated. That’s why Vick’s in jail now; he messed with “the man’s” idols and it cost him.

I’ve needed to drive a pet to the vet after it was hit by a car. I didn’t believe in driving recklessly then and I don’t now. I would not put the life of another human in danger for a pet. I would not put the life of another human in danger for a human. Accidents happen and when the worse occurs it is a sad thing. It is not an accident when vehicular homicide resulting from reckless behavior occurs.

I think the office should be given the same treatment as the dog. First off- you never tell the person with a sick animal or family member- you can just get a new one. NO you cannot. The office was a jerk and deserves to be demoted or fired. He lacks the compassion of being an officer.
I am totally pissed.

A few facts about what happened:
1. Driver was speeding at OVER 100mph
2. Driver initially FAILED to stop for police while traveling 100mph.
3. When Police approached vehicle driver was randomly screaming irately.
4. When officer asked what his problem was the driver asked what the OFFICER’S problem was.
5. Police are not mandated to protect a naturally dying animal over human life (the world is not ran by PETA….people who would and have proved they would sacrifice human life for a field mouse).
6. 20 minutes is a reasonable time to find out why the person was screaming and endangering lives. He ran them on the NCIC system to check license validity and warrants prior to writing a citation (or several, I can think of 3 valid ones).
7. Rest assured….Police officers don’t get fired or reprimanded for stopping screaming motorists failing to stop for the police at OVER 100mph! ( And could/should have gone to jail for reckless driving/failure to yield to emergency vehicle)
8. I would like to see the IQ for the attorney who would consider representing the screaming lunatic on the side of the road.

Give me a break! This cop did exactly the right thing! He made the road safe for HUMANS. To all you that think having a dog is the same as having a child….let me ask you…if they T-Boned a car going 50mph and killed a two year old on their way to take this DOG to the vet…would you still think it was justified? The sad thing is that some of you just said “sure” to yourself!

Cop was a jacka$$ with his dismissive comments about the guy’s dog. But he did give him a break in not taking him to jail for evading arrest. Cops love to scream at people, boss them around and, with any justification at all, assault them on the pretense of self-defense.

That cop should be terminated. All he cared about was establishing his dominance in the situation. All this talk about safety… I’ve seen cops traveling normally, light their overhead lights, blow through a red light and then turn the lights back off. What is that emergency? A hot batch of doughnuts at the Krispy Kreme? The dogs owner should have kept driving until he got to the vet. That is what I will do if ever in the situation.

First of all, I agree that the man in the video was in no condition to drive, and given the speed that he was traveling, I agree that he was endangering others. However, the officer’s conduct was clearly out of line. There is absolutely no reason to make that man feel worse than he already did. His comments were demeaning, and he spent more time talking to the man than writing the ticket. As a teacher, if I EVER used those words with my students I would be fired on the spot. And I believe that as a man of service to his community, he should treat others with respect. There is a way to respectfully tell the driver that he was wrong, write the ticket, and be on the way. Or- heaven for bid- HELP the man.

You people are retarded. This cop should not be fired, suspended, or anything. What he should be given is a commendation for doing his JOB. Ask yourself this, if this driver had hit another vehicle with one or more of your loved ones inside injuring or even killing them would you still feel that this cop should be fired? No. All of you would be asking for this driver to prosecuted to the fullest of the law and also asking whare was a cop while this man was speeding down the road. To the officer in the video, keep up the good job!

Cop - Come on. Mental or emotional issues? Isn’t that a little over the top? Is it so wrong that people have a love for their animals? I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. As an animal owner I could definitely see myself reacting like this man did. I wouldn’t do the same thing he did, but I certainly wouldn’t equate him to a person with emotional issues because he was distressed that his dog was dying.

I remember, before having children, saying silly things like “our dog is like our child.” Then we actually had a child and realized having a pet is NOTHING like having children. Anyone who says that has never had, or not yet had an actual child. If you have and are still saying that…you really need to consider professional help!

I was taking a sick horse to the UGA Veterinary hospital, late at night, in the rain, with a borrowed truck and trailer. About halfway to Athens, the trailer lights went…in the pouring rain, I realized I was not going to get the lights going again until I could really work on it…I turned on my hazards lights, and went on up the road. A few miles outside of Athens, a sheriff’s deputy pulled me over for the non-working trailer lights. As we stood in the pouring rain, he did not write me a ticket, but he was rude and not the least bit helpful. I asked him if he could follow or escort us to the animal hospital, but to no avail. I guess there is something to the “protect”, but not sure about the “serve.”

The driver was going way too fast, but the cop did not help. He could have given him a siren and light escort to the vet and THEN arrested him. Streets safe, dog safe, and criminal punished — a win, win, win situation.

i think that the police officer should have let the couple go because i used to have a pet of my own and it broke my heart when he died. I care a lot for my animals, but i also agree with the police officer. he was just trying to do his job. he could’ve prevented a car crash when he slowed the couple down. because if the driver drives too fast then it’s easy to hurt someone else or be hurt yourselves. The police officer should have written faster and told to drive slower and not as fast.

I break the law all the time, so what’s another one? Why should I obey laws when police officers don’t even follow laws? Look at the cops around here. All these news stories in the metro area this year… cops killing spouses and day laborers, cops stealing cars, cops running child prostitution rings, cops killing old ladies…sounds like they are the ones who should be locked up. I would do anything to save my dogs life, including the most horrible heinous crime of all… speeding. Auuugh!

That is just plain crazy, i beleive that the cop was wrong and just because this is a animal they have rights too. However the speed was a little extreme. Last Spring, one of our dogs started bleeding out of his nose. I’m not talking a trickle, either. It was gushing out like a hose.
As we rushed him to the emergency vet 30 miles away in Savannah, we wondered what an officer would say if he caught us speeding. Believe me, we were going fast, too. If we had waited any longer, he would’ve died.
Why anyone could ever think “It’s just a dog,” is beyond me. The dog we rushed to the vet is 11 years old. Just because he’s “just a dog” doesn’t make him any less of a family member. I would jump into a pond and fight a gator for any one of my dogs. Speed to the vet for them? Oh, heck, yes.
If I had been pulled over with my dog, I would’ve stepped out, told my spouse to head on, and let the cop write me a ticket while I stood on the side of the road.
Looks like nothing good comes out of Texas.

According to several versions they were traveling at speeds UP TO 95mph they didn’t say they MAINTAINED a speed of 95 mph and they asked the officer to let the girlfriend go on to the vets office while the boyfriend stayed for the ticket and the officers refused and now the police dept are dismissing the ticket to avoid further embarrassment, while I agree that the ticket is justified, if you watch the video there is not much traffic out and I, while going with the flow on 285 routinely go 80-85 mph (not at rush hour)but I would like to see that the cop not be fired but be moved to being a K9 officer so that his life will depend on “just a dog” I bet his attitude changes.

as i said in my comment above i love all animals. i watched the video and i think the cop was right to react that way because it’s others who he’s protecting. he might have settled the situation a little more calmly and not yelling, but he’s a police officer and he’s just trying to follow the law that applies to us all.
if i had to choose between a little girl or boy over the poor little creature then i would unfortunately have to say the child. i can’t believe i’m siding with the officer but i am. when i first read the question i said “Of course i would break the law to save my baby!” but after i read all of the comments, some made a lot of sense. 100mph is ridiculous, and so is taking 20min to write a ticket! taking that long to write a ticket is cruel. That i agree with most definitely.
On the other hand, i don’t think the cop should be fired. you can’t blame him for doing his job.
But i am really steamed that he said “you can get another dog.” and “i don’t care about your dog.” by those statements right there made me real mad. he didn’t have to say those things to get his point across. i don’t think he’s ever had a pet before and i hope the officer gets a pet of his own to see how much you get attached to your pet and the sacrifice to give them up. I will ask my parents to drive as fast as they can for my pet but putting others lives in jeopardy is out of the question. (i’m only 14.) unfortunately i have to side with the officer. i love all pets passionately but i would NOT be happy if i killed someone else. I would give the life i’ve taken for my pet. but i do NOT think that dogs are higher or lower than human beings. the animals and humans that GOD has put on earth are all the same just in different shapes or forms. I wouldn’t have stopped until the vet’s office and then he could’ve given me a ticket. Cops like this are out of control a-holes on power trips. If you remember, last year an officer did the same thing to a specialty surgeon on the way to operate on a teenage boy who died because Mr. Power Trip dawdled around harassing the surgeon and detained him from getting to the hospital. Considering the fact that they can’t even control the 100-150mph crotch-rocket riding thugs on I-20 and I routinely get passed on all of the local highways by people who HAVE to be going 100 since I’m going 80-85, if I were speeding with my pet or a person in grave condition, they could just keep following me until I arrived at the destination.

Oh -and here’s a response to “Parent” -I’m also a parent to human children and just as I would fly like a bat out of hell to get one of them to the ER, I would also do the same for a gravely ill pet. YES, my two dogs are lower on my chain than my children, but they’re still important. I think you’re also missing the point that many MANY people for MANY reasons have no children and their animals ARE their children. To leave a comment making light of their feelings is callous at best. I had a cat for 18 years who had to be put down due to total organ failure a week before my first child was born, and I STILL hurt over that cat.

The cop should have given them a police escort to the vet and then given them the ticket.

Once I felt that he was being a jerk I would have driven off and let them try to shoot out my tires.
My 2 dogs would come to my aid a 100 out of a 100 times, I wouldn’t sit there and watch them die in my arms while some clown tried to deal with his own problems at our expense. Regardless if it was a dog in trouble or a baby or child the reason they could do a 100 mph (if they actually were)was because not many cars are out and in the way that late. If it was 5 minutes until the HOT light came on at Krispy Kreme you know he would have had the ticket done in 2 minutes. Just another example of a jerk using his badge to stick it to someone in need.

Police, law enforcement, cops, etc. are people who are not bright enough to get a regular job. As such those who are in this line of work have to be looked upon with a kind heart as it is all they can do. And given their IQ’s we can’t expect to much.

I very well might have driven off right over that officer’s foot if ne-be if he was dwadling THAT long. ….And I’m ex- law enforcement!

What goes around comes around. Yes, I would break the law to save my pet, my best friend. The speed was probably a little much but I would still speed. Hope the pig was reprimanded. P.S. Why didn’t the cop just help them get to the vet’s office faster, an escort. He must not have a heart.

First, don’t say you hate the police because of this incident. I am a police officer and I am horrified by this. Recently while I was directing traffic a kitten darted out into traffic. I stopped an 8 lane divided highway until it safely crossed (no chance of catching it or I would have made a total fool out of myself to do so), I’ve brought animals home that I found in vacant apartments and wandering the streets when animal control has been unable to come out. I can’t say whether I’d have ticketed this man but I would have at least escorted them to the vet clinic to sort it out. This is a case of an individual officer who was too macho and mad because the driver didn’t stop to care about what the actual situation was.

The cop was too nice… It’s a stupid dog that was putting possibly “your” life in danger! Anyone who says that the cop should be fired needs to re-evaluate their morals and humanity. The police should have done everyone (including the dog) a favor and put his gun to work.

Cop is going to hell anyway, for saying G.D. as a public official and for hating dogs. What an @$$h0le.
Also, it ought to be 100% LEGAL for someone to cold-cock a cop if they ask you if you want to go to jail. Either run the guy in already or quit being a threatening smartaleck.
I hope he gets shot dead by a crack dealer next week, and lets God sort out his guts. This officer is a menace to society and makes a mockery of the law and law enforcement. Send him to hell directly.

I drove like a bat out of hell when my dog was dying. Flashers going and ran red lights when I could. I would not have stopped until I was at a vet had I been blue lighted. The policeman didn’t say he was driving recklessly just fast. I hate to break this to you but people drive that fast or as fast every freaking day for no reason. I don’t know if the policeman should be fired but he is heartless and I hope this video shows around the country just how what a heartless b@s*@*d he is. As for those who don’t like animals or don’t understand the bond of those who do not have children and love their animals like people are just plain cold hearted. Actually I feel for your children.

I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve seen a cop going 100+ mph after midnight on the freeway with no lights flashing, and what can we do about it? We can’t follow him and get his plate, we will be the ones getting a ticket. As for this hopeful future winner of a Darwin Award cop… once a bully… always a bully. Hope he smarts off to the wrong guy some day.

I have no problem with people who place dogs equal with people. No problem with people who don’t have children, so they love their pets as some would love their kids. I do have a problem with people who want to legislate their personal feelings for animals and have no problem trying to destroy the careers of those who don’t worship animals to their own standards. I truly believe when people start challenging some of the animal versus people laws on civil rights grounds the animal rights crowd will be back at ground zero. No one will be at fault more than yourselves. There will be a time when the Supreme Court explains the difference between animals and people and the animals will loose every time. Enjoy the Rome you are building, for in time, it will surely burn. By the way, really a bummer about the tea cup poodle, they can be little dolls.

I love my 2 dogs & 15 year old cat…certainly understand driver’s concern for family dog; however, driving at excessive speed while talking on cell phone poses danger to driver, his passengers, others on road. Cop should have been more level headed & professional instead of continually yelling, berating driver. 20 minutes to write ticket in this situation was cruel…karma will get lone star tinhorn lawboy, paybacks are hell!

Am I sympathetic to the driver and his girlfriend?
Absolutely.
Could the police officer have spoken less harshly about the gentleman’s bipolar disorder, and more sympathetically about the dog’s condition?
Absolutely.
But this driver was 100% wrong when all is said and done. The officer had to assess the situation at first — he didn’t know it was a driver distraught over his dog, and not some punk kid strung out on acid or some other drug. I understand the officer’s initial approach.
The “I can tell you’re bipolar” comment stung — I struggle with bipolar, but I have to admit that when I’m having an episode, I/my loved ones help me get the care that I need, and I refrain from being in situations in which I can be a danger to others or myself — it’s called taking responsibility for yourself.
The officer could have spoken in a more “touchy-feely” fashion, but Officer Friendly does not exist. What is this, Oprah? Sally Jessy? I don’t know about you, but I want those Serving and Protecting me to be hardcore. Touchy-feely will not register with the criminal element, guys.
Besides, even though I am sympathetic, the driver was 100% wrong for endangering lives with his excess speed, and 100% wrong for technically evading the police.
The officer showed that he wasn’t trying to power trip by letting the guy off for the evasion charge — a felony — which he did not have to do, and he could have gotten him on reckless driving. Letting the gentleman off with just a speeding ticket, and nothing else, was Christmas come early for this driver. And as others have commented, the gentleman needed the time to calm down and gather himself. He truly did. Those of you who have commented without viewing the video, watch and see for yourselves.
I am not heartless, and I truly feel for the gentleman. On top of dealing with bipolar from day-to-day, which is no picnic, he has lost his beloved pet, but no one is ever going to convince me that animals and humans are on the same par. I may well have another pet someday, but until my pets start working and paying bills, my life, and the lives of my human friends and family — any human life, for that matter — will come before the life of an animal any day of the week.
I feel for this gentleman and hope that his wounds will heal soon, but I have even greater hopes for the safety of this law enforcement officer and the men and women like him who put their lives on the line for us every day.

In response to those that say it is only an animal, and we need to get over it. That we need to be concerned with the homeless or other “so called” huamn related issues. My response is as a human we have the ability to make the decisons that affect the outcome of our lives. An animal does not, it may depend on a human to take care of it. Man was not put on earth to rule over animals, in fact humankind time on the planet pales in comparision to that of animals or insects. And long after man has left the planet, other life forms will continue to exist. Get off your high human podium and realize that man is not the only creature on this planet, and that the world does not exist to serve mankind.
As for the homeless, or battered, they made decisions in thier lifes, or had other humans create the problems, that lead them to that point. A dog does not make a person homelss. A cat does not cause a person to become a child abuser. It was another human or thier own actions that caused the problem. It may be hard and painful to change things in thier lives, but they have the ability to do so. And if animals are such “lowly creatures” as many of you may say, how come you don’t see drug abuse, alcohol abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse and other human created problems in the animal world. If they exists, it is because of the human interaction.
Think about it.
We now return to your regularly scheduled life…

100 miles an hour especially while carrying on a conversation on the cell phone is stupid. Even if the dog was a child, the risks of accidents and killing or worse, only mamming oneself or innocent people ‘in the way’is not the way to handle the situation. At 75mph in a non-hysterical manner perhaps the dog would have made it to the vet’s office with no problem. Speeding and acting crazy is just one of an officer’s nightmares.
By the way, when was the last time you were waiting on an officer to help with an intruder in your home and you were praying he would put on lights and siren to get through an intersection and to you faster and turn them off so as not to “escalate” the situation at your home.
The officer is only human. We all need to be responsible humans whether it is our beloved dog or our precious child we are trying to get help for.

Had those people driven 65-70 mph, they wouldn’t have been stopped and detained for 20 minutes. They would have made it to the vet and may have saved their pet. Excessive speed only saves a few minutes and certainly isn’t worth the endangering yourself, your spouse & children, other drivers who also may have their pets with them. Would those who are furious at the cop feel the same way had the couple wrecked and killed someone’s pet by trying to save their own? The owners are squarely at fault. Yes, the cop was jerk, but his job is to make sure the roads are safe.

“Cop” needs a few lessons in humanity anc civility and love. What a jerk - almost as idiotic as the cop in Texas! I would not have stopped until I reached the Vet’s office. This cop is not only a jerk, but truly a monster. He’s probably one of those cops who appear in the news every couple of weeks, for murdering their wives, raping their girlfriends or beating their kids. I was already shocked and broken-hearted about the dog, and now, as a poodle lover and owner, I’m even more saddened to hear it was a tiny little poodle. The people lost their precious, beloved child, and anyone who doesn’t understand the wonderful and loving relationship between a dog and it’s parents is a sad, hollow person indeed!

It really irked me when I heard the officer say, “it’s just a dog.” Obviously he doesn’t have a dog or he could never have said that. People who think like that scare me and I’m very leery of people who don’t like dogs. Personally I like dogs better than most people and I’d do anything to save one of my three. And, JRT, I agree with what you say and believe that since we domesticated dogs & cats, it’s our responsibility to take care of them.

Last year I rescued a dog from highway 20 against the median in traffic. (I know it wasn’t the smartest move on my part but it looked so pitiful.) The officer who pulled up behind me did not think so– The dog ran under my car- and I was really scared but I was trying to get him out and into my car. The officer was demanding that I move–with the dog under my car. I refused and waited on animal control. Animal control used a catch pole and put him in my car. His name is Wesley for Wesley Chappel, he was treated for heartworms and has a nice home now.

The cop was a jerk, regardless of the situation.
Now, I would go to the ends of the earth for my dogs and would go as fast as possible to the vet if I had to. But I wouldn’t go 100 mph.
If a cop tried to pull me over, I would PULL OVER. Maybe he can help get me to the vet faster (some cops are animal lovers, I’m sure, even if they’re not “allowed” to do that). I know that the situation would be so much worse if I didn’t pull over. I’m sorry but even though I love my dogs and would do just about anything for them, I won’t jeopardize others’ lives and safety. Someone made a good point when they said that ambulances don’t even drive that fast (of course the people inside are usually getting medical attention on the way to the hospital, but still).

I would not have driven 100 MPH, but still would have been willing to run a redlight (after looking to see if intersection was clear).
I also believe that the Poliecman should be reprimanded for his comment about it “only being a dog”. We lost our dog about 1 month ago and she was like a member of the family.

I too would drive any speed to save the life of my two dogs and three cats. Chocohlate Chip, Socks, Peanut Butter, Mia and Willie B are important to me as well as human life. The driver was hysterical and I agree that there is reason for the stop, but once confirming the story the cops DID NOTHING to help. He belated the dirver on his “Damn dog” and on purpose took forever to right the ticket. That is the sad part. That cop could have helped with the animal first and then write the ticket. First of all, Cop, that was a great post. I am an animal person, and I agree 100%. That guy was dangerous.
But to answer your comment above, look no further than about 10 posts above yours. The guy’s attorney is obviously hoping the jury will have members who believe this utter ridiculousness:

Yes I would break the law to save my pet. He is like my child. He is a part of my family. He depends on me to protect him. If - God forbid - I was in the midst of rushing him to the vet. due to an emergency situation I would break the law and wouldn’t care. I am a law abiding citizen, but a true emergency is just that = AN EMERGENCY!

This is absolutely the truth, though I do think the officer might have been a bit more understanding once he realized what the issue was. But, overall, the safety of the public wins out here over a dog.
Yes, I love my dogs dearly. We are emotionally connected, and I cannot imagine my life without them. But I would never forgive myself if I injured someone or worse in this type of scenario. And neither would you, even those of you who honestly believe (how frightening) that a pet’s life is more important than ANY human.
That one is still boggling my mind.

One other thing…what’s with all the “police haters”? Some of you have a lot of anger towards the police in general. I realize there is plenty of corruption in the industry (as in any industry), and I agree that it irks me when cops speed by me with no lights or siren, but geez.
I hope you folks never have an emergency where you need the police. If you do, despite the irony of it all, they will respond. Will you say the things you’ve said on here to their faces? I think not. Stop painting everyone with the same brush. You think it’s OK that you only do it on the internet, but I’ll bet that immaturity spills over into your real lives.
No, I have no police officers in my family, or even a close friend. But I am mature enough to understand that most of them actually do serve and protect us.
Seems to me that most people who say they “hate cops” have had run-ins with the law, and felt like they were being “victimized” (when in fact they were in the wrong and the cop was just doing his or her job). Real mature, people.
If you have actually been victimized by police, then I feel for you, and you have a valid concern. But I seriously doubt that’s the case here.

I went out for lunch today and while going down 75 I saw one of the blue highway patrol cars go by in the HOV lane at about 80 mph in a 55 zone. No lights, no siren, just cruising along at 80 because the laws don’t apply to him. HE IS THE LAW!!! Who is going to give HIM a ticket? Where are all his safety concerns when he is speeding? Had I not been in the far right lane I would have tried to get his car info and turned him in for speeding but as it was he was too far gone by the time I realized what had happened.

People break the law all the time without having any reason to do so. Hope you think they should be put under the jail too. The police should have helped in this case not hindered. The owner did need to slow down some, and the policeman could have helped that occur. However, it doesn’t take 20 minutes to write a ticket. The policeman was obviously just being a jerk and should be cited for it. A ticket could have been written at the vet’s office, and some assistance could have been provided in getting the pet to the vet safely. After, the owner is a taxpayer. The owner should consult an attorney.

When I took my drivers ed in high school I remember being told that if an animal is crossing the road and your choice is to hit the animal or swerve and hit another car or human then you hit the animal because the humans life is more valuable. That very much applies in this instance. I love my fur kids but it’s unreasonable to think that you can drive 100 miles and hour while talking on your cell phone and not get a ticket. My God what if they had blown a tire while driving then they all would have been dead. Use common sense people.
For the record, I was in the car with a friend who was pulled over for speeding and it took about 20 min for the cop to write the ticket and run her plates. 20 mins isn’t unreasonable.

JJ,
No, contrary to what you say and how cops think and behave, they can NOT “do what they want, when they want”. Let one of those hot headed road demons cause an accident with me and their lights and siren are not on and there WILL be a lawsuit. When they are not responding to an emergency, they are supposed to obey the laws of the road like everyone else. And can that crap about putting their lives on the line every day, it is getting tired. That is part of the job, just like smelling unpleasant things is part of being the job of a garbage man. If the job requirements are too unpleasant, get another job. A badge is not a license to break any law you feel like because you feel like it. I’d be willing to bet that since you have several members of your family in law enforcement, that you have a black and blue bumper sticker on the back of your car so that hopefully you too can receive preferential treatment from the cops the next time you are pulled over for speeding.

For one thing, the officer had no way of knowing who was driving that car or why they were driving so fast. It’s ashame so many people are talking about breaking the law. So….what else would you guys do to break the law? It’s amazing how many people hate police officers, until they need them. Every since Michael Vick was arrested for animal cruelty, the world all of sudden has taking animal loving to the extreme. Next people will be sent to jail for accidently running over a dog. What is this world coming to.

No SoccerMom I don’t have a black and blue sticker. I don’t expect preferrential treatment. And if I am caught speeding, I will (And have) paid the fine, MANY TIMES (yes I have a lead foot).
And not everyone follows the rules of the road. Do you? Do you drive at the posted speed limit? Do you come to a complete stop at a stop sign? I could go on, but I am sure you have broken a law or two yourself.
Now go sit out on I75 and report each and every person who is speeding, not just the cops, but everyone!!! I want license plate numbers. And please be sure that your radar equipment is fully calibrated. That should keep you pretty busy for awhile….

I tend to agree with Soccer Mom. In my residential neighborhood, there is a street with sidewalks where people routinely walk with or without pets. That street has a very low speed limit - which it should. However, I frequently see police cars speeding up and down it with no sirens and no indication they are coming. That’s an accident waiting to happen. If they are not on the way to a call, the police need to obey the law just like the rest of us.

To “Dogrealist” you are the one who seems angry. You are voicing your opionion along with everyone here. Bottem line: there was an emergency - the police should have helped!!!not hindered people from taking care of their loved one. I have been harrassed my a police officer and I still have the utmost respect for them and I am “mature” enough to know they have a tough job. In fact I got a speeding ticket just last week. He was doing his job and I was in the wrong. I said I was sorry. The ticket was written and off we both went. That DID NOT happen in this situation. The officer was abusing his authority knowing he had threatened the man with jail. It is not that the police stopped him that we are all angry about - it is the way the officer handled it.
Mature or not IT WAS WRONG!!!! Wonder how the copy would feel if his life is saved by “only a damn dog”!!!!

My theory of people that have so many bad things to say about police officer is that they are all law breakers themselves, that’s why they hate the police. 100mph is excessive speed. If that driver whould have wrecked and slammed into one of you guys relative car and killed them, whould you be so pet sensitive then. Have you hugged your child and told him/her that you love them today or did you walk pass them and kiss the dog first

This is wrong. This couple LOVED their dog. There is no measure you can place on that. 100MPH was a bit much, but I think the officer could have told them to slow down, let them make it to the vet, and go from there. WHERE IS THE COMPASSION!! This man was obviously distressed over a MEMBER of the family. If you’ve never had a pet that you’ve loved this way … then sure, many won’t understand. I am saddened by this… GREATLY!!!

I know from personal experience that I can blow breaths into my dog’s nose for air in his lungs. I hope that the vet was telling this man this information. Also, all my dogs have been huge and I have literally, physically stuck my hand down his or her throat and pulled out whatever was choking them. I kept yelling at the screen to blow breaths into his dog’s nose ! Also, the policeman really doesn’t understand the love and bond we have with our animals. He should be reprimanded and made to apologize for his assinine behavior. He said over and over that he didn’t give a damn about the dog…well the owner did! I, of course, do not condone the speeding but the cop was a jerk!

It is clear that on top of speeding, this guy is out of control. Officers encounter people every day, that come up with stories, trying to talk their way out of going to jail. He said that he is bipolar. So what was the girl excuse? She should have atleast remained calm. Why during a time of recession, are so many people so quick to have people lose their job? Not to make this about color, but if that guy was African American, these comments would be alot different. Everybody would want that driver cited for speeding no questions asked.

This confirms that we as a society have lost our minds. Since when is any animal’s life worth more than a human? Anyone going 100+ mph should be given a ticket and put in jail for reckless driving. This driver put every person’s life on that road at risk and to top it off, he was on a cell phone. Don’t blame the cop for this guys ignorance, reckless driving is reckless driving and you can’t justify going 100+ mph to save an animal.

I don’t expect every person on the highway to obey the speed limit; they have not taken an oath to uphold the law. I expect the police to be held to a higher standard, not to try to get away with what they can because they can hide behind their badge and intimidate people. What is the difference between cops speeding on the highway because they can get away with it and Daytona Beach police officer Lt. Major Garvin who was fired for demanding free coffee and tea from a Starbucks and threatening employees with slower emergency response times if they refused? It is dishonest and it sullies the honor of decent cops that don’t make asses of themselves. I don’t care if you call it graft, payolla or, as you phrased it, “Cops can do what they want, when they want” because they put their lives on the line. Soldiers put their lives on the line too, can they break any laws they see fit and wrap the flag around themselves as a defense like cops hide behind a badge? That cop was a total ass and should be reprimanded or fired. I also don’t think that this was an isolated incedent, I’d be willing to bet that this kind of behaviour by the cop is a regular occurance. As for your question of how fast I was going, please refer to my statement that I was driving in the far right hand lane. That should give you an idea of my speed.

What an asshole police officer

I like what Sirius said. Tell his family, you can get another one.
What you are forgetting is at all hours of the night and day “people are going 100 mph on 85 and 285.” and gee we never see a cop. The woman who crossed the medium and killed her 3yr old hitting someone head on. Gee she can pop out another one. Get my drift…you cannot just get another one. And yes I still think dogs are better than 98% of the human population.
And no you cannot replace one with another one.
Next time, instead of being cruel to the animal and the “humans” just put them in the back of your stupid car and take them.
Most people don’t think you are special because you are a cop.
So stop pushing your so-called superiorty on others.
Simple solution….TAKE THEM YOURSELF AND THEN DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO.
Lets just hope you never need immediate help…God remembers…Missy was his creature also.

You animal worshipers and animal rights law supporters enjoy Rome while you can. The day will come when the Supreme Court of this land will explain the difference in animals rights and human rights. No one will be to blame more than yourselves. When your animal rights laws are fully challenge in civil rights court you will be left at ground zero. At present, you guys are your on worst enemies. Your Rome will surely burn. I personally love animals, I don’t agree with legislating my feelings.

I love my dog but does anyone remember that going 100mph while on their cell is against the law which was written for the protection of its citizens. Would you rather kill a child and save the dog? If a police officer let him go to continue his 100mph journey and mail a citation then he should be fired.

Someone should put a collar and chain on the “officer”. If he had a brain in his head he would have gotten in front of the car driven by the dog owner, put on his lights & siren, and escorted them to the emergency vet. They did not have to go 100mph, but they did need to get to the vet in a hurry, and a police escort would be recognized.

The officer could have escorted the family to the vet’s office or he could have driven them there in his patrol car. That police officer badly needs to attened sensitivity training and if his superior officers feel the same way he does, they should attend themselves. Many people do not have human beings as children and instead have animals as their children. A pet is as much a child to most people these days as a human child. That dog was that couples’ child and that officer should be held accountable and when the time comes, that officer should have to pay for another pet for that couple. That’s the least he should be made to do by his superior officers!

What I take issue with is the officers insensitve smart azzed wize azzed cracks. ” are you on something?” its just a dog..” what a butthole. the time he spent running his chops scolding the driver he could have been finished writing the ticket. I watched him scold the guy wasting time..thats the issue I have. True the guy was wrong for driving 100. but cop was wrong for wasting time scolding the driver when he should have imediately began writing the ticket and keeping his fat lip shut..Karma is a bytch. what goes around will come back and bite you right in the butt. Its quite apparent the officer never even owned a dog. Folks who dont like animals are very non caring. He should have been reprimanded for his Mouth. If your going to give someone a ticket no one needs to hear your lip. Leave that to the judge. A the police wonder why the public cares very little for them. This is to the officer..next time Officer Barney Fife just issue the ticket and keep your fat lip shut..no one is interested in your comments!

Come on and get you some of crackmeup , IT WAS JUST A DOG! Thats right, public HUMAN safety versus JUST A DOG! The dog lost because he isn’t equal to a human. If it had been a person the officer would have escorted. Its that simple, JUST A DOG! I don’t think the officer doesn’t like animals. I think you guys don’t like him because he doesn’t consider dogs to be human equals. The day will come when the Supreme Court will explain the difference between animals and humans. Don’t forget to fiddle while your Rome is burning. Its was JUST A DOG!

The cop ABSOLUTELY did the right thing. These animal lovers can see blacks, hispanics or other “undesirables” suffer and die, and not even flinch. Jesus showed human life is far more important by dying for us and not our pets. There is no hope of afterlife for animals. Incidentally, I have never abused or neglected an animal, I don’t believing in hunting safaris and have owned animals for 42 years. Perhap the owners pain would have been less if they (emotionally) had kept pets in their proper place.

There is no ambulance service for animals. I would definately do the same thing if my dog were dying. I do think 100 mph is excessive, but obviously the owner was in a panic state trying to reach the vets office.
I hope the officer is punished for his handling of the situation. He should have turned on his lights, escorted them to the vet and then if he felt like a ticket was necessary wrote it there after the dog was in the care of a professional. Shame on him.

GM, the officer didn’t give him high speed escort because it was JUST A DOG. The officer doesn’t need punishment or be nicer to animals training. I would recommend he go decafe, with his coffee though.

If the officer had allowed the drive to continue he would be telling everybody on the road that they get to choose what is important enough to break the law. Dog? Cat? Goldfish? Sea Monket?
Had the officer put the dog in his car then not made it? What are the odds that the couple would have sued?
This time the crazy driver (crazy with grief? shock?) didnt run into any other people, this time. I love people who hate police, want sensitivity training, then complain the police never come when they are needed…probably they are all in sensitivity training.

This “cop” should be fired immediately for what he did to this couple and their precious baby “Missy”. The ignorance of pet owners - mind you I said “pet owners” NOT animal lovers, truly disturbs me. They say children are our greatest resource…. to this I say NO. Animals are our greatest resource who sacrifice their lives each and everyday for mankind. Animals are truly the providers of “unconditional love”, sacrifices, and companionship. Their lives are of the upmost value, but often they are treated as “oh, it’s only a dog, a cat, an elephant, a bird, a horse, etc..” Animals love, hurt, mourn, feel pain, cry, laugh(smile), and will stick by you better than any human I have encountered. Yet, by “pet owners”, they are chained-never walked, helplessly tortured by those demons who delight in dogfighting, left out in the cold, the rain, severe weather without a thought of “Maybe we can let “Fluffy” in the garage, or in the house.” Are your material possessions worth more than a pet’s life? If the answer is yes, then I beg of you to never own a pet, cause you will never know the joy they bring. I am a dedicated “animal lover”, and I am probably one of the many animal lovers seen pulling on the side of the highways, and biways to save these precious babies. So honk your horn “pet owners”, call me foolish as you swiftly pass by me - I don’t care, cause there’s a life I’m trying to save from the destruction of mankind. There’s a couple of sayings I’d like to share: “Society is measured by the way it treats its animals.”, and my favorite by Will Rogers: “If there are no animals in Heaven, then I want to go where they are.”
To all animal lovers:
Please fight for the rights of these precious creatures!!!! After all, GOD created them FIRST !!!!

I love my dog but at 100mph it would have been very easy to cause an accident and humaan life would have been lost.
The officer was in the right and if the driver had been calmer the officer would have likly behaved differently.
The officers first responcibilty was to traffic safety. I would not want my child to die in a wreck to save a dog, as much as i like dogs.
Should the officer pretended to be more sympathetic,…perhaps.

I personally think the driver should have stuck to the speed limit or just a little above if it where that disparate. I also think the officer should have been a little more sympathetic to the situation as well, noting the occupants of the vehicle where stressed, you think he would have allowed them to drive to the vet before issuing the ticket.
though still if it where my dog, yes, I would speed to get medical treatment. Though I wouldn’t be pushing it too far either. I also would contacted the police department first to tell them I’m in a bit of a hurry. then contact the vet so they can be ready for my arrival.. 60 seconds on the phone to the police department may have made the difference in this case but not every one can keep calm in a stressful Situation to think of these kinds of things.

Wow, even if I got stopped speeding with my dying pet in the car, it’s horrible that the cop wouldn’t even let them go tend to it.
That’s just cruel.
I’d like to think I wouldn’t go 100mph, but if my puppy were dying, who knows what I would do? She’s my baby!

My brother is a cop but this guy should be fired. It could have just as easily been this mans wife or child that was dying. I have had to rush my cats in the middle of the night to the vet and I didn’t care how fast I was going.

I love all animals, and the question “would you break the law to save an animal?” would depend on what extend etc. I would have broken the car window for the dog dying of a heat stroke. Any idiot leaving an animal locked in a hot car should be punished as harshely as the one who leaves the child in a hot car. However if I needed to rush and get my pet to the vet I would not recklessly drive at 100 mph. I would drive only as fast as I could safely do so, for if I caused an accident by speeding recklessly down the roads trying to get my pet to the vet 10 or 20 minutes sooner. I could be responsible for not only the death of the pet I was trying to save, but the death of someones child or pet. I don’t think it would matter to them if I tried to explain my actions away by the need to get my seriously ill or injured pet to the vet 10 minutes sooner then I could by driving at a safe speed. I know it would never ease the guilt I would feel for the harm my actions had caused.

“It’s just a dog, you can get another one”
I’d like to tell that guy, “well, it’s just a job, you can get another one” and fire the hell out of him.
If an officer pulls over someone escorting a woman about to give birth, they rush them to the hospital. Hate to say it, but at least if this happened in that scenario, the baby would be born in the car and they’d have a nice story to tell. But when it’s something DYING, not being born, that’s absolutely the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
If it was me, I’d put on both blinkers and zoooooooooooooooom to the vet. Break the law now, explain later.
How sad…
