Know a good, Fido-friendly neighborhood?

Three dogs looking through a fence So where are the best places to live for pet lovers? A blogger who is looking to move here wants to know. What are the best pet friendly apartments or condos? For instance, my neighborhood has plenty of dogs and dog lovers. (A great dog park too!) But with no sidewalks, you take your life — and your dog’s — in your hands for a walk around our lake, where most people choose to stroll. So I couldn’t really recommend it.

Do you know a great neighborhood for, in this case, big dogs? If so, let’s hear it.

INMAN PARK! Behind the MARTA in Freedom Park. The most friendly people gather there daily to let their dogs play. The greatest neighbors meet their for some doggie fellowship.

Colonial Hills in East Point, GA. A small neighborhood of about 400 homes with nice wide sidewalks, its own park in the neighborhood, and plenty of dog-lovers.

Peachtree Lofts in Midtown has an off leash dog yard where residents gather with their dogs. It is close to Piedmont Park, which has a large off leash dog park (with another fenced dog area for small dogs).

East Atlanta. We have Brownwood Park and Park Grounds is up the street. We all know the dog’s names before we know the owner. Every establishment in our village is dog friendly. Bring your best friend and visit.

Yes, my Druid Hills neighborhood is full of people walking their dogs and we too tend to know the dog owners by their dogs. I have been referred to as the woman with three dogs (only two now, one died) by people who have no idea what my name is. The downside is we have some stubborn pet owners who refuse to pick up after their dogs and we all get a bad rap because of a few. I have had to defend myself countless times to people even though I have a bag of poop with me as evidence that I am not one of them. Say a prayer for the dogs in New Orleans, reports from dog rescuers say that even though people this time were allowed to take their pets, hundreds were still left behind, many tied up in yards left to somehow care for themselves.

There is a great dog park in Dunwoody, in the Liane Levitan Center at Brook Run. It is huge, fully wooded, and is frequented by very friendly people and great dogs. See www.jawitp.com for details and a contact link.

Collingwood apartments in Alpharetta is great for dog lovers, too. The office staff gives my dog treats every time we visit them. They just opened a dog park in the complex this past spring and it’s been a big hit. My dog loves to go and play with all his friends there.

The Wills Park complex has both large and small dog enclosures and it’s only a few miles away. And we’re right across the street from the Alpharetta Greenway, which is great for long weekend walks.

Park Avenue in Smyrna (next to West Village off Oakdale Rd.) has a dog park in the middle of the community. The community consists of townhomes and single family homes. Dog park is surrounded by nice single family homes. Great place for pooches!

HUH? Matt, I’ve lived in several cities in NY, as well as in Chicago and stayed a while in Connecticut. While there’s lots about my ol’ stomping grounds I miss that I don’t find here, I’d say the South is DEFINITELY dog-friendly. My furry kidlets and I go for long ambling walks at Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville almost daily–1.5 miles on a nicely maintained path through the woods. Once in a while, just for fun, we check out another people-park or one of the numerous dog parks in Gwinnett. ALWAYS people are warm and friendly, and like the others who’ve posted,we all know each other via our dogs! That’s my reality, anyhow…as well as Bob & Annie’s, my happy Southern pooches.

Winnona Park in Decatur. Plenty of room for dogs to run and the neighborhood is large enough and safe enough to walk your pet without having to worry about traffic.

Lake Court Dog Park in Smyrna. It’s near the corner of South Cobb Drive and Concord Road. Large fenced area for the dogs to run. Anywhere from 10-30 dogs on any given night and the people are very friendly!

In the City of Stone Mountain, off Main Street in a residential area, is a tiny charming dog “park” that’s smaller than most but easy to find, to park, and to combine with a longer experience of strolling the town before or after doggies have their play date! With a TINY bit of seating for humans and fresh water, safe fenced area for dogs, all it lacks is a tad more SHADE for the sunny days.
    See you there!

My neighbor’s dog is one of those little furballs. He barks at everything all the time. Day or night. We’ve told her umpteen times about this yet she does nothing. We’ve called the cops before too.

Be a good neighbor! Don’t let you dog bark from 5:30a - 7:30a and not do anything!!!

    Small Dog Owner

Be very careful in the Belvedere Park/ Midway Road area. There are lots of large strays running around the area. Their owners have lost their homes and just turn them out into the streets, many pit bulls and large dogs. It’s impossible for me to walk my small dogs without confronting one. We were attacked by a pit bull/cattle dog mix that had my small dogs whole head in its mouth, blood everywhere. I finally beat the attacker in the eyes with the retractable leash and it let go. Many months later puppy is okay but terrified if you try to take her for a walk.

What can be done about a neighbor that lets their pit bull out of the house to run loose without supervision? I bought my house because it has enough yard for us to play in. I can’t go outside to play for fear that the dog will come out and come at us.

I have called animal control so many times and nothing has been done so I stopped calling. I feel like a prisioner in my own home. I have a yard and can’t even enjoy it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs but this dog has chased us before on several occasions. I have to take a bat with me just to check the mailbox.

What can be done when Dekalb County Animal Control won’t help? I have pictures of the dog in MY yard.

    Matt,
I know you are smarter than to realize there are many people from ALL walks of life that live here. Some love animals, some don’t. If you don’t, what are you doing here? Why ruin it for those that enjoy it? If dogs don’t get out and socialize, they don’t behave and become aggressive. Then in turn people don’t like them. See how that works? I feel dog parks are nessary.
Anyone know of any parks up north? I only know of Windermere and one off of exit 10. I’d like to find one more towards Dawsonville.

    Concerned:
I would call the police and have them send an officer out. He/she would then probably call animal control and try to contact the animal’s owner. Depending on how the animal reacts when the officer shows up, the owner could just be cited.
