How do you find a good dog trainer?

This week’s Pet Tale comes from a comment by KT:
As a dog owner I have read and watched many programs on dog training. I enjoyed reading Cesar’s second book, Be The Pack Leader, earlier this year. The only thing is that we don’t all have access to someone like Cesar. Fortunately, we do have an amazing facility north of Atlanta that can train ANY dog!

For those of you who need to train your dog you might want to check out the Georgia Dog Gym. My husband and I have done both group and private lessons with our dog. Our experience there has been amazing! A benefit of using them is that they guarantee their work for the life of your pet! So anytime we want we can take our dog back for a refresher course if need be with no charge.

What should you look for in a dog trainer? For questions about your dog’s behavior, submit a question to our Pet Expert today.

Take a look a the previous Pet Dish entry on Mr. Millan’s visit.

I had a truly wonderful experience with a company called “Dog Training In Your Home”. My trainer’s name is Dee Bass, and she has helped me tremendously with my 115 pound rotty/pyrenese mix.

She comes to my house once per week, and my dog has learned everything from coming when called, to protection training (that was hard, because although he’s big, he’s a big wuss!).

Dee is based out of Chattanooga, but does see clients in Northwest Ga. You can find the company on the web if needed.

I never knew Barlow could be such a good boy! And, at 8 years old, who says old dogs can’t learn new tricks! Having a trainer come to your home and work with you and your dog is really the only way to do it! I highly recommend it!

I have had a wonderful experience over the past 1-1/2 years with Man’s Best Friend. They did wonders with my crazed Brittany, then they worked with me. He is a different dog - self confident, happy, and obedient. And he is never destructive any more. Their training is also “for life” and they help with anything that comes up. I like the group classes where my dog learns to do his thing even with the distractions of other people and dogs.

I only started watching the show because Cesar was such a good looking guy! Then before I realized it I was also taking in some of the tips and getting a better understanding about my own dogs! So, his looks drew me and his knowledge of dogs keep me coming back. It’s a win win!!

Ask people who have well-trained dogs!

There are many ways to train, and several formats for training. What works with one dog may not work for another, so find a trainer that offers several different formats, or is willing to explore other methods if their favorite one doesn’t work.

Happy, satisfied customers with dogs who listen well to them, are the best advertisement for training.

Oh, and a good trainer should have good people skills, too. There is no reason in the world for a trainer to belittle you or make you feel stupid.

On the Georgia Dog Gym Home Page, I have a great article on how to select a dog trainer. www.georgiadoggym.com
I appreciate the kind words posted here regarding my dog training center. I work very hard to provide positive results for dogs and their owners. There are a number of other very good and talented trainers in the Atlanta metro area. For me, when I select a trainer for my own dogs, such as when I started in dog agility, the first thing I looked at were the examples of training provided by the trainer’s own personal dogs. I want to see happy dogs who are eager to respond and have a good relationship with their trainer owners. Second to that, I want to be able to connect with the trainer and have a good rapport with that person. Third, I want a trainer who is able to acknowledge what I am doing right with my dog as well as be able to help me with sorting through what I may be having trouble with. Happy Training to All!

If you need help finding a trainer in your area, contact me and I’ll be happy to help you with a referral!
