Pet Tales: Does your pet need drugs?

dog getting a shot

This week’s Pet Tale comes from comments by Tonya and Malinoisrocks:

From Tanya:

We have an Aussie who has to be be drugged for storms, but she has only gotten worse. She is not destructive at least but will end up having a heart attack.

Some dogs are so afraid they will hurt themselves to get away. Talk to your vet about using Ace (the drug) before a storm hits to help. An outside dog can hang themselves, get away and run and not look back.

From Malinoisrocks:

Many in the behavioral science community view the tenets—and consequences—of Cesar Milan with much trepidation. In an interview published in the NY Times in February, Dr. Nicolas Dodman, Director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, observed, “My college thinks it is a travesty. We’ve written to National Geographic Channel and told them they have put dog training back 20 years.”

That’s the same Dr. Dodman who thinks drugs will solve all dog behavior problems.

It’s so much easier to drug a dog than train it.

Can drugs work sometimes? Sure. Are they needed for things that training can fix? No. Do many people like Dodman like to prescribe drugs because they have no idea how to actually train a dog? Yes.

Dog training is both a science and an art. What works for one will not work for another. Cesar’s methods work for many. Personally, I prefer Millan to Stilwell after having seen both shows.

The main reason I like Cesar is because his “exercise, discipline, affection” mantra is SPOT ON. You don’t have to agree with him, like his show, or use his techniques.

If they don’t work for you, use something else. All the rhetoric of the techniques “setting dog training back” and causing all this harm–where is the overwhelming proof?

People want quick fixes, and the truth is that there aren’t any. Do the work, and your dog will benefit.

(But, what do you guys think? Do you agree with the members’ points? Do you medicate your dog? If so, why?)

I have always had cat’s and I currently have 4. I have never had to medicate any of them before. However my 4 year old male is so stressed by being put in the carrying case and taken to the vet’s office that he urinates and defecates on himself. The last time I took him in for his yearly exam the vet gave me something to give him. It didn’t seem to help. I am not sure if it is the carrying case or knowing that he is going to the vet’s office that stresses him so.
    Any ideas?

    Melodie,
I’m not a professional by any means, but have had many pets. I do have a couple things you could try with your kitty. First, maybe a new/different carrying case would be beneficial. Cats are extremely sensitive to their environment, including smells, so when you try to put him in that case, he “remembers” how terrified he was the last time. Also, maybe it’s the type of case he dislikes. If it’s small and enclosed, try something a bit bigger. If it’s big enough for him to move around, try something cozier.
You should try these things in your home, before trying to put him in the car. It could be the car itself that scares him, or going outside (if he’s strictly indoors.) If he doesn’t mind the case inside, then you know it’s a different issue.

One other thing I’ve found, with my cats at least, is they need to be as close to each other as possible when travelling. If we must go for long trips, they have a large cage they ride in together. If short ones, like to the vet, they have soft-side cases that I seatbelt in next to each other so they can sniff and touch noses/paws through the mesh. If I don’t do this, they scream the whole way.
Maybe your little kitty would benefit from a companion for his trips, so he can have some cuddle-comfort.

Hope something in that was helpful!

Please tell me what “Ace” is. It is mentioned in the above article. My 10 year old lab was given Xanax for her storm anxiety. It helps, but not completely. And usually you don’t have a lot of warning that there’s going to be thunder and lightning when it rains and I don’t want to medicate her ahead of time if the storm blows through quickly. Yesterday, for example, it rained all day, but only started thundering late in the afternoon. No one was home and Sugar tried to get into a corner of the living room where we keep board games and she scattered them all over the place trying to get herself into that corner. And, they were all covered in drool! By the time I got home, the storm had passed and she was fine. Guess who had to clean up the mess? I know there’s not really a good solution, but I am curious about that medication. Thanks!

We also have an Aussie who is scared of thunderstorms. I recently read that Aussies and other herding dogs are especially sensitive to noise and I believe it. Her vet wanted us to do behavior therapy, take her to UGA for treatment, etc… At 12 yrs old, I just wanted something to help soothe her. She has been very destructive in the past and I feel you have to weight the damage the dog can do to your home and itself versus some medication. If we can take meds for car sickness, headaches, etc… why should we deny relief to our pets? I am not saying that drugs are the only answer, but I don’t think they should be ruled out completely.

I have a 6-year-old Scotish Fold who has a heart murmur and kidney disease. She is on beta-blockers and a special diet. I love her so much and when I found out about his, I was a complete wreck.
