Pet Tales: How much to save a pet?

injured dog

Mattie’s comment kicks off this week’s Pet Tales:

“We love our Golden. She’s best buddies with our second dog, a Lab. Between the gold hair and the black, sometimes it looks like we have tweed carpets. Our dogs are dogs are both energetic, but neither one is hyper. We lucked out. I would love another Golden, but we’ve had some health issues with our current one, both knees replaced, and some hip dysplasia, so I think we’re planning on adding another Lab to the family.”

Have you shelled out big bucks for animal emergencies or major pet surgery? Is there a cap set on how much you’re willing to spend?

Our, now 8 yr old, Boykin Spaniel, Buddy, has titanium pins, plates and screws in his back paw courtsey of UGA and approximately $3,000. He was just a puppy when the accident happened and I would do it all over again. It took me 2 years to pay off the loan, but the pleasure he has given us is well worth it. I have 2 new boykin puppies and have pet insurance in place. My dogs truely leave footprints on my heart.

I adopted my dog for $150 then, 3 weeks later, paid $500 to save one of his toes.

My mom has saved many animals. Picked up a kitten that was either thrown out of a car or fell from a car’s undercarriage. Spent $800 on it and now it’s the most expensive barn cat ever! :)

We sadly lost two pets this year, spent $300 on both, only to lose both despite our efforts. Then we spent $450.00 for private cremation of both our dog and cat.

I feel, as long as there’s hope for a good quality of life, I would spend whatever I had to in order to save a pet.

This has been the most expensive year ever for vet bills. Two of my creatures (1 cat, 1 dog) have been critically ill with the little cat dying in March. Was concerned about the amount being spent but would cheerfully do it again. The elderly dog still requires much care so I can forsee more expenses in the immediate future. I get so much joy from my pets that taking the necessary care of them is my privilege.

Recently spent nearly $800 on vet care in a single day, only to find out nothing was wrong with my dog. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

How much do I have? How much can I put my hands on? Will it improve the dog’s life? That’s my equation.

Has your family pet been treated at UGA? Was it a difficult case and the staff and students pulled your furry family member through? I would like your story, please.

I’m working on a fund-raiser for the GRACE fund and the Sundown fund…proceeds will be split between those two funds, which help make sure that cost isn’t a factor when people are faced with the decision to treat, get rid of the pet, or euthanize it. I can’t pay you for your story, but your name will be part of the project, if you would like it to be. Launch date is first quarter of 2009, so please get your story to me as soon as you can. If you know of someone who also has a great story, please forward this listing to them, too!

I’m doing this because one of our dogs had a really bad December, 2007. The day I took him over to Athens, the vet couldn’t have been nicer, and it was obvious that he was used to dealing with people who had to make hard decisions at times. Our dog had as good an outcome as possible, given what the vets had to work with, and it has continued to break my heart to think of someone in our situation who couldn’t have afforded the several thousand dollars his care cost…what would they have done?

I want to help people not have to make that hard decision. I need your help…got a great story? Tell me, please!

Our rotweiler mix got hit in the jaw with a tire iron my a neighbor who felt intimidated by her. The first vet we took her to said she would never be the same and that we would have to put her down. Well, my husband was the one who took her to the vet, and I wasn’t hearing of it. You would have thought they had said we would have to put down one of the children the way I reacted. I refused to let this happen. We ended up having to let our dog,
Sheeba spend the night at that bad vet’s office. My husband and son went to pick her up the next morning so that we could take her for a second opinion. The vet at that clinic kept telling my husband -in front of my son- how we would be wasting our time and money and that the dog was no longer a “good dog.” $2500 and 8 years later, she’s still a happy healthy dog loving life and being loved. She was too a “good dog” you BAD VET!

February of this year, we spent around $10K on spinal surgery only to lose our dog. We then adopted another, and we are now unexpectedly facing cancer with her with $600+ already spent. So, this has not been a good year for doggies in our household. The most annoying thing is that I was ‘this’ close to buying pet insurance for the new dog when we found out. So the moral to the story is know yourself. If you are the person who gets attached to your dogs, cats, etc and will do all you can and then some to maintain your pets quality of life, go ahead and buy insurance for them.

Sadly in April 2007 I spent over $800.00 only to find out there was nothing that could be done for my beautiful 9 year old cat, Toni. Toni had weighed 17 lbs at her previous check up so I had been trying to watch her food intake and was not concerned by the fact that she had lost a couple of lbs that year. On April 23 I took her in for her yearly exam and they felt a mass in her abdomen. They took x-rays and it showed a large mass but they could not tell if it was a hairball or something worse. Since Toni had not shown any symptoms of illness, they gave her all her shot’s and we made an appointment with a vet that had ultra-sound equipement. The ultra-sound showed the mass, which they said could be a hairball and multiple cyst on her liver. They said if she had infection from a hairball it could cause cyst or it could be something worse. Before they could do a liver biopsy they had to do blood work to determine if Toni was strong enough to handle the anesthesia.
Before they even had the results of the biopsy I knew Toni was a very sick baby and I feared I was going to lose her. She was rapidly losing weight because she could hardly keep anything on her stomache and would sometimes cry as if she was in pain. It took over a week before the vet called me. Bad news a rapidly growing form of liver cancer. He said there was really nothing to be done except keep her as comfortable as possible. We put her on pain meds, by the middle of May she was in unbearable pain and we had her euthanized. I petted her and told her what a beautiful, good girl she was, until she peacefully slipped away. I have a picture of her above my computer, I can look up and into those beautiful green eyes. I miss her very much, my 16 year old male Jake cried for her for a long time too. He has not developed as close a relationship with any of my other cat’s as what he had with Toni. If I could have saved her, I would have.

We lost 2 of our French Brittany Spaniels this year due to a rapidly moving cancer and one to liver failure. We then went to Brittany rescue and adopted a male who has hip displaysia. The vet who looked at his xrays said a femoral head reduction would be needed. We learned about accupuncture from a friend and he has had 2 sessions and seems to do better for the week in between treatments. We are also looking into gold bead therapy where gold beads are inserted and has been shown to be very helpful. As long as we can afford it, we’ll do it. He is to sweet to put down. So, each person makes a choice on how much they can afford to do or putting the dog down if the quality of life is not going to be changed by expensive treatments.

I have a doberman rescue that was run over in a fenced yard by one of my alleged ‘friends.’ It literally tore her hind leg off at the hock and she nearly bled to death on the way to the vet (tourniquet and all). After surviving shock, extensive bloodloss, multiple transfusions, an amputation and $6000 later, she is doing well. I would spend every penny all over again to have her make it through and be such a happy and fun dog. I couldn’t bear for her to die in such a traumatic and senseless way.
