Pet Tales: Going camping with your cat?

Cat and tent

This week’s Member Post comes from Melodie:

“My oldest cat, Jake, who is now 16, is leash trained. When he was younger I use to take him camping with me. Most of the campgrounds in the state of Georgia, at least back then, I guess they still do, allowed pets as long as they were on leashes. I would tie a rope between two trees and attach his retractable leash to this, or if there were no trees I would attach it to the top of the front of the tent, when we were just hanging out at the camp site. I only found one campground in North west Florida and it was a private camp ground. It was on a beach but it was on the sound so it had a barrier island between it and the open ocean, Jake liked walking on the beach there since the waves were not as high as they would have been on the open ocean, he loved the smells especially when the tide was out and he could go out further and smell what I been there when it was covered in water, fishy smells.

The state run campgrounds in Florida would not even let you through the gate with a pet due to the rate of abandoned animals, especially feral cat’s.

Jake loved camping and it was fun to take him camping with me. Other people would get a kick out of it because most of them said they had never seen a cat on a leash before. I can’t believe the number of people who think cat’s cannot be leash trained. Jake always had to have his covered litter box, he would not even pee on the ground. During the day I would sit his litter box out beside the tent and at night I would sit it back in the tent with us. The only time he was off his leash was at night when we were in the tent sleeping. In the mornings he knew he had to get his harness on first thing, before we went outside.
He never even tried unzipping the tent until one night we were camping at Lake Winford Scott, I was awakened by a storm in the distance and I realized that Jake was not in the tent with me and the bottem of the tent was unzipped. I could just imagine him going down to the lake and one of those alligators taking one bite and he would be gone. I was terrified. I dashed out of the tent and started looking and calling him. I looked and he was sitting under the picnic table staring back at me like “What’s the big deal” I took the bread ties and tied the 3 zippers together in the middle after that and he never got out of the tent again.

We don’t camp anymore, Jake has arthritis and I am afraid I would hurt him trying to put a harness on him. I have never tried taking any other cat camping, but then Jake has never been an ordinary cat.”

Do you go camping with your cats or dogs? What was your experience?

Even during the daytime, I’d be worried about the kitty. On a leash they can’t runaway or climb a tree from predators.

Coyotes especially are almost foolish in the way that they attack during the day with people nearby.

    Karen,
Your concern would be justified if I had been leaving Jake alone. Or even going a distance away from him, but I was not. This would have upset him very much had I done so. He went everywhere with me. I never heard any Coyotes in any of the areas where we camped. Not to say they were not around somewhere, but they where not heard or seen in the campgrounds.

I did get a scare while we were in camping in Florida though. I had recently read in the paper that the Ospry had been taking small dogs from a nearby neighborhood. Jake and I were walking along the sound when a couple of Ospry begin flying up the beach line, obviously searching for dinner. I immediatly picked Jake up and went back to where our campsite was, grateful for the trees that sheltered it.

    What a scare!

    Joel
Guess you don’t like to have fun with your pets. I didn’t do it to impress anyone. I did it to have fun and I had the time of my life It is something I will never forget. My grandchildren love to hear the stories about it and see the pictures! I only wish I had a digital camera back then or I had a scanner now so that I could put them on my computer and share them too.

Hey, Melodie…good for you, taking your furry friend along for the fun. I love to hike with my dogs and have to admit to never seeing a cat on a leash, but it would be refreshing to see it. It would be refreshing to see dogs on leashes all the time, too. Many people think their pets should “run free” but it’s not safe for the pets, nor for the wildlife or other park visitors.

More power to everyone who leashes their pets, no matter what sort of pet they have!

    Hi Melodie,

I also have a cat (Pete the Cat) that will walk on a leash, which I have taken camping at state parks here in Ga. He loves to walk outside!!! Pete is 14 years old and is still a very loving companion and very active for his age. Thanks for sharing your story.

    Good Evening Dogears,
It is so wonderful to hear of someone else who enjoys going camping with their cat. Jake is very loving and active also. His Vet say’s he is as healthy as the average 8 year old and even his blood work was what you would expect of a much younger feline. He even run’s and plays with his 1 & 1/2 year old housemate’s for short burst. Jake is a Manx and that is most likely why he has arthritis in his hips and lower spine according to the vet. When it flare’s up, I can tell he is in pain and about once a year, or so, we get a cortisone shot and that helps. I expect Jake to be around a lot longer as he is a very young 16.

We aren’t owned by any cats, but we do take our dogs camping. Their favorite campground is Four Paws Kingdom in Rutherfordton, NC (www.4pawskingdom.com). I must admit, I have yet to see a leashed cat at Four Paws, but it would be great to see!!
