Dogs vs. cats: Who appreciates their owners more?

cat, dog sleeping

For those of us with mixed households (dogs and cats), this anonymously-written pet “diary” circulating the Internet should strike home:

The Dog’s Diary

The Cat’s Diary

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. Morons!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now…

What is the situation like in your cat and dog household? Do the dogs seem to appreciate you more than the cats? Do you ever have the feeling that your cats see your home as a prison?

The cats use the house as a way station where they occasionally sleep and stop for a bite to eat.The latter about 5 times a day.Hint:If the can doesn’t say “gormet patĂȘ” on it,don’t even bother to open it.Seafood only please, nothing else.

The dog,on the other hand, appreciates anything that is given to him in the line of food.He is also much more loving. He’ll sit and watch you at the dinner table for as long as you want to sit there. He’ll suck up any attention that you’ll give him.The cats ,on the other hand are not only stand offish, they’re stand way offish.

Dogs are domesticated. Cats really aren’t. Even if you just look at how long we have been keeping them as pets, dogs win out by tens of thousands of years.

You only need to be around a dog and a cat to know who appreciates your presence and who tollerates your presence.

That being said, if you buy or adopt one, you don’t get off on the responsibility part of the program just because you have a cat.

The neighbors don’t want your cat in their yard. They don’t want your cat killing and eating the wonderful birds that find a safe haven in their yard. They don’t want to find your cat’s dead body in their yard after their dog has killed it. They don’t want to have a dog that kills things and they don’t appreciate your irresponsibility in allowing your cat to go roaming. They also don’t want to have to deal with any of your cat’s unwanted kittens.

Nor does anyone want to deal with any irresponsible behavior from your dog.

Please be a responsible owner whatever your personal preference.

Dogs, of course! Our dog’s love is unconditional.
Our cat is a user. Only rubs up against us when she wants food. She’s just like a teenager. Eats then takes off to parts unknown.

Cats! My cats are affectionate all the time, not just when they want to be fed (I usually get rub against AFTER they eat). They sleep with us, have their spots on the couches, and don’t go outside to kill birds and other creatures. I’ve had both cats and dogs, but I’ve been cats-only for decades now. Cats are much smarter!

I’ve never been a dog owner, but I think my cat’s diary would look more like the diary of the dog. He waits for me at the door every day when I come home, eats dinner next to me, watches TV with me, and cuddles with me at night. I’m also covered with kitty kisses every day. He’s the best!

My cat does somersaults when I come home and gives kisses. I love dogs, but you can’t leave them for a long weekend. I don’t have to get up and take the dog out or let it out. Cats are much less trouble and can be quite affectionate without the slobber. I loved my dog when she was alive, but I am now a cat person…so much easier.

I love my cats despite, or even because, of their arrogant ways.
They are so much fun to watch and they love to play. The youngest comes to me each night and “yells” at me until I get up and find her toy and play with her. She also likes to be brushed. I can hold her brush up and talk to her about it and then she comes to my lap to be brushed. But she flicks her tail the whole time, like she’s doing me a favor and is tolerating it - just barely.
I love to cuddle at night, especially when it’s cold. And they come to meet me whenever I come home and when I wake up they are there wanting love, and breakfast of course.

It depends on the dog or cat. My mixed Chihuahua/Rat Terrier is very affectionate but demanding. My Bernese Mountain Dog doesn’t like too much attention or sugar lavished on her. She is our “cat” as my husband calls her; very independent. I haven’t had a cat since I was little and I only remember chasing them around the house looking to play with them.

Why must people continue to compare apples and oranges?

However, inconsiderate, rude, downright stupid owners, who won’t control their pets, read on.
I am sick of your ineptitude and callous disregard for MY property.

If I went hunting or pooped on your property, you would have me arrested. Yet you lame-brained dimwits let your pets do just that.

I have become sooooo sick of this, I am placing a live trap, and will just load them in the truck, take them to the pound. I will do this as many times as you knuckleheads keep thinking YOUR pet is somehow MY responsibility.

Control your pets or else I will.

I have 4 cats and one dog. I had two dogs, but one was killed by a snake this summer. The dogs are protectors of us. They love us and would risk their own lives to help us.

I don’t particularly like cats, but my wife can’t help herself but to rescue one every time she sees one living in some dumpster somewhere. We get them fixed and then they live their days annoying me. I go to the kitchen, there is one in there asking for food. There is always one at the door, wanting to come or go. And now the worst part. It seems when they get very old (18 years old to be precise) they have bladder control problems. Its disgusting. When they were younger, we didn’t have a litter box. When they had to go, they went outside. Now, I have smelly boxes of urine and feces in my home which have to be cleaned about 5 times a day.

Yes, occassionally they like attention, but this desire to be petted is nowhere near enough compensation to put up with their horrible habits.

Meanwhile, I take my dog to the lake and she appreciates swimming and riding in the boat. She knows to be quiet when I fish. She worries about me if I swim. She is a true friend who would never think to disrespect my home by urinating and deficating in a box. The shame of that would likely kill her.

I’ve had both cats and dogs in the past but haven’t in some time. It cracks me up that some people seem to think it is the end of the world if a dog/cat steps foot in their yard. Heaven forbid they actually poop on your property. Lighten up. I like to take care of my yard as much as anyone but it is not the end of the world if an animal uses your grass. The world is a brighter place with pets in it. The jerk that wants to trap cats and dogs for going in their yard deserves the whupin (spelling intentional) they will get from the owner for doing that (we can only hope).

Every so often my cat gets the notion that the moment is right and he attacks and tries to kill me. Otherwise, he enjoys my company especially when I’m enjoying the back porch or working in the yard. On top of that he realizes that he lacks opposable thumbs and requires me to open and pour his food into the bowl, and that he needs me to open the door when he knocks. So hopefully if he ever does get a good claw and fang hold, he’ll remember this before he finishes me off!

I have decided the older my cat gets (she’s 13) the sweeter she is. She has always bonded with me more than my husband but she now spreads the love to the both of us. Even her pesty dog brother and sister gets a little head bunting every now and then.

Overall, my 2 dogs are more loving but I would not trade any of them for the world!

I grew up with dogs and was always a dog person. Until.. last summer I found a kitten in a parking lot, living out of a dumpster. Brought her home and am so glad! She is extremely loving, keeps me laughing with her playing and running around, and fetches her toys like a dog. Much easier to care for than a dog but with all of the personality, fun and sweetness that I associated with dogs. The only drawback is that I can’t throw a leash on her and take her hiking with me. If I could I would!

Our rescued and spayed feline stray has adopted us in her own way.
She comes and goes through the doggie door, wants some nuggets, but doesn’t ask for more.
She tolerates the dogs and a little petting, but doesn’t need attention or human fretting.
She made herself a little lair and at night likes sleeping there.
She’s now a part of our family brood, but all in all, ours is still a doggie dog world.

I have been a cat lover since I brought home my first stray when I was 6. I can’t argue with the fact that dogs are more “receptive” than cats. But I am a cat person - I have 2 “indoor” and I trained both of them like they were dogs. It worked! They “talk” to us in different tones (glad AND mad), come when they are called, watch TV, chase balls and eat what they are given. If I could just teach them to defend our home…….

The other thing is He loves to sleep on my feet when it’s cold out (no need for socks)so yep, he’s keeper!

Before cats and dogs can give you affection, they must receive it. The world would be filled with much sweeter, kinder, and gentler animals if everyone took responsibility to raise their pets correctly and for honorable purposes. The end result is a lovable affection from any animal - and there is no way you can measure that!

My 11 year-old dog is my best friend and like a little child. He’s smart, protective, and loyal. When strangers knock he will growl and ready to defend. But at the same time can be a playful thing.

Besides, I can’t stand the smell of a litter box inside a house. Humans are not designed to inhale turds in their living spaces no matter how much you mask it.

I am not even close to being the only one in my neighborhod that finds inconsiderate morons like you disgusting. Also, I am not the only one that will be setting live traps for YOUR stray pets.

We have three cats and two dogs. Our cats think they’re dogs; they fetch, they growl when someone comes to the door, they give us kisses, they come when called, they snuggle, etc. And of course, our dogs think they’re cats; they curl up into round furballs when they sleep, they cuddle with the cats, they clean the cats (my husband says they’re just tasting them, and they try to walk across the back of the sofa like the kitties do!

I cannot believe the number of people who are AMAZED that our cats and our dogs all get along and that they actually seem to like each other! They assume that every dog and every cat naturally hates each other and that the dogs automatically will chase the cats. In our house the cats chase the dogs just as much as the dogs chase them… it’s called playing! Either these folks don’t get out much or…well, they don’t get out much!

Our two rescue cats were raised for the first four years of their lives with a dog, and still have some very dog-like characteristics. Both are sweet, loving, and very social (they love to hang out with company, and “talk” back when people talk to them!). But with one exception, all the cats I’ve had throughout my life have been sweet-natured, and returned affection in spades once they learned they would get it from me. I love dogs, too, but there’s just something regal about cats that no dog can match. da Vinci was dead-on when he said, “Even the smallest feline is a masterpiece.”

Cats were once revered as gods, they will not let humans forget this. Churchill, I think. Though I do know he said something along the lines of “A cat looks down on you, a dog looks up to you. Give me a pig, they look you right in the eye as an equal.”

That being said, I’m the proud “Dad” of two kittens that are very good at drilling. The Wife and I think they’re preparing Charlie Tunnel and trying to locate Steve McQueen. But they’re very affectionate, if not a little on the over-affectionate side. I know they appreciate us, but do they have to let us know by purring and sitting on our heads at 3 in the morning?

Cats adore me, but unfortunately I’m seriously allergic to them (hello epipen), so I have become a dog person (yes, apparently it’s possible to be allergic to one and not the other). My compromise was rescuing a Chihuahua. He’s very loving, but small and managable like a cat. He’s also much more protective of me than a cat ever would be. I’ve since adopted him a brother, a Chi/Corgi mix who exhibits cat-like tendencies in climbing the furniture and licking the Chihuahua.

I’ve also decided that my Chihuahua was Napoleon in a past life. He has a habit of ruling the roost, no matter where he is and how big the other dog is. It’s hysterical to watch sometimes, but somehow he winds up in charge.

    @molulu

    That is a reasonable question.

No. We are not mad at the persons, who are being responsible, walking their pet along the road, and the pet poops on the road/property/malbox line. You are right. Those responsible pet owners usually clean up after their pet, and THAT IS the courteous thing to do. I do it EVERY time. Plus, the cat stays inside, away from the environment, where it does not belong and has a negative impact on wildlife.

The action comes against the moronic pet owners that let their pets roam the neighborhood, unleashed and uncaring of the practical laws in place against such irresponsibility. It is not the pet’s fault. It is the JERK OWNER’S fault. And, no I don’t want to find some idiot’s dog pack digging in MY yard, little piles of feathers that used to be a Brown Thrasher, dog/cat poop and urine in my flower beds, which we work very hard to maintain, confrontations at the front door with pit bulls that want to “visit”-kill my dog, etc…

    Enough is Enough!

My 10-year old cat has always been very un-catlike, probably because he’s 100% indoors (he was declawed when I adopted him). Sure, he can be aloof, but he definitely shows his love and appreciation–he greets me at the door when I come home, he follows me while I’m doing housework, he jumps on my lap for petting at every opportunity, and he sleeps on my feet every night. I don’t think he feels like he’s in captivity–on the rare occasion he gets out, he usually runs right back in.

My dog, not surprisingly, loves and appreciates me as well. He wiggles his whole butt when I come home, he gives me lots of slobbery kisses, and he snuggles with me while I watch TV (he’s not allowed to sleep on the bed at night, or he’d do that too). However, while my cat seems to be particular about those with whom he shares his affection (he clearly prefers me to my fiance), the puppy loves just about everyone, especially if there are treats or toys involved.

I have been a cat person since 1970. Can’t imagine living my life without a cat. With the exception of 1 cat (I called her my “psycho kitty”), every cat I have had has been a loving and wonderful pet. They follow me around just like the toy poodle does (when I got married, I had to become a poodle person, too). I love him to pieces but still believe that cats are less trouble and if you truly love them, cleaning out the litter box is no big deal. You have to take the dog out in all kinds of weather and wait until he is finished. That’s much more trouble than the litter box. Both of my pets are indoor only. We wouldn’t run the risk of either one of them getting killed by another animal or car or whatever. I believe responsible pet owners keep their pets inside and safe!!

Maybe all your indifference and/or hatred towards your pet cats is reflected in how your cats treat you.

I’ve had dogs, cats, and both at the same time, and all were equally affectionate. Cats have a bit more difficulty communicating their wants and needs, and it takes them longer to get over a slight. Many dogs are affectionate with everyone, not just their owners; their owners are for the most part replaceable. (”My favorite thing!”)

That said, I love my dog very much, and sense that while he seeks and appreciates other human company, after 10 years of life together, I’m still his “top” choice.

    Guys,

I enjoy reading these posts every now and then. I also have come to realize that with every post, there will always be someone on here to ruffle your feathers, just under a different name each time. Let it go.

Cats rule, dogs drool, slobber, etc… Don’t get me wrong I love dogs, but they are a bit too needy for me - must be walked, beg for food and are always looking (or creating) an “escape hatch” from their fenced in backyard. My cats nibble from their food bowls, snuggle in my lap, groom me on occaison, and keep my house and my neighbors free of rodents. Did I mention they are champion bug killers too!

    Kung Pao Dog,

You need to meet my neighborhood Chinese eateria chef. His name is Fung She It…that would be properly said - “Chef Fung She It”, and he makes the most amazing sweet-n-sour stir fried “fragrant meat” on rice. His dumpling appetizers have a distinct earthy aroma, reminiscent of catnip.

So fresh it literally barks at you. He said he learned to make it from Chef Gordon Ramsey.

    Tom,

Where have you been? Living in a cave?

They do eat pet animals plus endangered species out the wazoo. You ever heard of shark finning? That’s a real neat practice, where they cut the shark’s dorsal fin off, keep it, and throw the shark back to die. How about tiger’s penis to make theirs erect. Guess Viagra doesn’t work on them.

“Fragrant meat” is code for dog. They like to traumatize the dog before they kill it. They think if the aninmal is scared, the meat tastes sweeter. Same thing for cats, except I forget the code name for them.

Now you know. Great culture, huh.

Americans aren’t much better. We like to take little Jimmy to the circus, so he can watch elephants perform after they have been beaten into submission. Litte Jimmy laughs at the cute animals. You don’t think they want to do those tricks, do you?

Since my cat ran away from home two weeks ago, after all we did to accomodate it, I would have to say my dog is more appreciative.

Lisa, I don’t think that cat was ever yours to begin with. Cats sometimes stray and from time to time one will show up at your door step, use you up and then move on (usually back home). If he did’t like you from the beginning he wouldn’t have stayed 2weeks and that translates into affection. Some of us know what it’s like when our cats disapear then strool home when they feel like it and that what yours did. Hmmmmmmmm it reminds me of a guy I once knew!!

    puppy luv,

You really are a dim bulb, aren’t you?

In your retort, you might as well have said,”same to you but more of it”.

It sad that there are people so dumb, but those are usually the ones that have no respect and are lazy.

shaggy, the fact that you have to be a angst little teenage about some people being lazy or rant about such things, means nothing but you being another internet bully. You have no right to be spewing all your BS at people. I’m sure everyone who ever own a dog, had days where people left their dogs poo on a lawn doesn’t mean you lay at trap for the other guy. This is life, and sometimes life happen-so get use to it (geez)

    Tsukasa,

Could you (or anyone else) please provide an interpretation for the garbage you wrote?

I can’t understand it, but I know it must be stupid.

I have 4 cats and three dogs, they are all very sweet. My husband is home with them during the day and they all get plenty of attention. our cats act like the dogs since they all grew up together. Our animals are all resued so they know a good thing when they see it.
Animals make life so much better they lift your spirits up when your down. We love each one of them. God gave us the ability to love all his creatures.

Does the AJC plant people like Shaggy to write inappropiate comments or is that a real person constanly checking back on comments to see if they baited someone?
We are just a bunch of dog and cat lovers, this is not the forum to act foolish…I would bank that your boss is out of town for the holidays and didn’t leave you enough work or the Psych ward just got internet..

    Lucilee,

So, because you do not agree with my comments, they are inappropriate?

Plus, you not agreeing gives you license to call me names and insinuate that I am in a psych ward. Others here have wanted me castrated, beat up, and one that can’t even write coherently, says I am an “angst little teenager”, whatever that is.

All of this, including you, without any argument, except childish retorts.

    Act foolish, indeed.

I love cat’s and dogs. Most of my life I have had both. The last 16 or 17 years I have only had cat’s. But my oldest cat Jake has a lot of personality traits of a dog even before he ever met a dog. He loved to play fetch, chase, tug of war, etc. and people would comment that he played “dog games”. I guess they also thought that because he is leash trained and used to go everywhere with me. When we were camping in Navarre, Florida he met a dog also named Jake and they became best friends. Then my daughter found a little 6 month old jack russell mix in a dumpster with a broken leg. She named him Chester. Once Chester’s leg healed, when we would go to spend a few weeks with them, Jake and Chester would be so excited to see each other. Jake was teaching Chester to act like a Cat and Chester taught Jake how to do more doggie things (like drink out of the toilet). They were both very loyal pets. Jake is still a very loyal and loving pet. All 4 of my cat’s meet me at the door each day when I come home from work. Chester is no longer with us, he got out unleashed one day.

None of my cat’s try to get out either, except Jake. All I have to do is pick some grass for him and bring it in and he will let me bring him right back inside, most of the time. I have a pot of grass growing for him, and they munch on it, but for some reason it is not the same.

I love both cat and dog. They are both very delicious. At some moments in time, my cat is attracked to my dog. My family used to think this was very odd but we came to the conclusion that my cat loves to have relations with my dog. I love cat and dog.
