Pet Tales: Control your pet! Please!

The member blog entry comes from Shannon:
I’m a pet sitter and this issue drives me BATS!
Twice, in different neighborhoods, I’ve had unleashed dogs challenge the leashed dogs I was walking.
Both times, the unleashed dog was smaller and initiated the confrontation. The worst was when I was walking two dogs, on the side walk, and the other person’s dog was unleashed in the front yard. Instead of doing anything to restrain her dog, this woman just stood there shrieking as I struggled to control my client’s two dogs and keep her dog away from them.
For pete’s sake, people, control your dogs if you love them!
How well do you control your dog when two of you go for a stroll? What are your tactics? Or does he or she control you?
I totally agree with you, Shannon. I was walking my dog (a large male Rottwieler) in a park a couple of months ago, and two big dogs came running up to him growling and trying to snif him. He is a very laid back dog, but he did not like this and they were just about to get into a fight when the owner came strolling out of the woods holding hands with his girlfriend. My dog was on a leash, and I was yelling at the other dogs. He came over with a quick apology and continued walking thru the park. He did not even have leashes with him.
I also have neighbors who walk their dog without a leash every day. Also a male dog who challenges anyone with dogs on leashes.
My dogs are big and if it came down to a fight there would not be a contest.
So, if you choose to walk your dog or let it out without a leash, don’t be surprised when something happens to your dog.

Carry pepper spray! It doesn’t harm like it does people but it will jar the dog enough to make it want to get away.
It’s a shame that one has to do this, I know but my dogs’ safety comes first.

GM,
I totally agree. Pet animals roaming around is a big problem in my neighborhood, and we have decided to set live traps and just take them to the pound. Sadly, that seems the only way, because the irresponsible morons that own them, won’t do anything. I am convinced they are too stupid and lazy.
I have 2 pets and am responsible for them, just as I have been for every animal I have ever owned. I would never allow my dog to run loose on other people’s property, without that person’s express permission. Also, I won’t allow the cat to hunt or roam and kill the wildlife. It sickens me to find a little pile of feathers that used to be a songbird.
On another board here, the jackasses who seem to think I somehow am responsible for their animals, have blasted me, but for some reason, can’t argue my point.
I am not talking about the occasional escaped pet. I am commenting on the idiotic humans that let their animals roam. Period.

Not quite sure why people think it’s such a great thing to let their dogs and cats run loose. I’m going to make up cards to hand out while hiking with my leashed dogs this winter, and to hand out while walking my leashed dogs in my neighborhood, and when seeing neighbors allow their cat to be an indoor/outdoor cat:
The Top 10 Reasons To Restrain Your Pet…
10. It’s the law.
9. It keeps them from being hit by cars.
8. It keeps them from being eaten by coyotes.
7. It keeps them from being part of the pet-overpopulation problem.
6. It keeps them from getting into fights with other dogs.
5. It keeps them from being harassed by ill-mannered children.
4. It keeps your neighbors happier with you.
3. It keeps animal control from ringing your doorbell and giving you citations.
2. It keeps your pet alive and healthy for much longer.
1. You love them…don’t you?

Even living in an apartment complex I encounter people who don’t have their dogs on leash. The leash law still applies in gated communities. I have a 100 lb. Akita mix who is very well trained, however if a dog charges her she is going to react. I don’t want a dog getting hurt because their owner let’s them run free.
P.S. Please scoop the poop!
