Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan is here!
Cesar Millan, star of the show “Dog Whisperer” on the National Geographic channel, comes to town Dec. 6 for his first Atlanta seminar. During the three-hour event, Millan will discuss how people can have happier, healthier relationships with their dogs.
In advance of his visit, we asked him a few questions about what he’s been up to, about dogs in general, and about what kind of dog President-elect Barack Obama should get for his family.
Q: You’ve had best-selling books, a hit television show and DVDs. What are you doing now?
A: I’m doing a book and a video right now on how to raise a puppy. People say you have to do different things with different breeds, but the truth is, they’re all dogs. You just have to reach the dog in them and help that flower. We’re filming Season 5 right now, and we just celebrated our 100th episode not too long ago. We had a big party with 100 dogs and their owners there. Not one fight. Everybody was in their happy/calm state.
Q: Americans obviously love their dogs. So why are so many messed up?
A: If you spoil a dog and they don’t have to work for it, you get an out-of-control dog. A dog, what he wants is a good walk, interaction with others of his kind and rules. The most positive thing I’m doing is training a human to be a calm, assertive leader. I don’t train dogs, I train people.
Q: You’ve probably heard the Obama family plans to get a dog once they get to Washington, but because their older daughter has allergies, they want a hypoallergenic dog. Any suggestions for them?
A: They should not get a high-energy dog. Because they’re such a busy family, they need a medium-energy dog. If they don’t know how to get a medium-energy dog, I’d be happy to help them. But that’s more important than any hypoallergenic or not hypoallergenic. And then the president has to practice leadership with the dog as well. It’s the most primal message.
If we see the dog running in front of the president getting off Air Force One or running into the White House first, then we’ll know he’s lost control. The dog rules.
(The interview was conducted by Reporter Sandy Eckstein)

I have a Pit Bull/Chow mix who is 6 years old. She thinks our visitors have come to see her. She jumps, gives them paw, sniffs…anything to get their attention. If I put her outside, she howls something AWFUL or is destructive if she can grab something. What am I doing wrong or not doing?

I have 5 dogs. Our most recent is a Beagle. SweetPea was bred to be a hunting dog, but she would not train. The breder sold her to my husband and told him that she had failed her training incuring punishment. SweetPea is terrified of people. For the first year she lived with us, she would run and hide or hide in plain site by lying perfectly still. She has recently began to want petting and affection, but she is still terrified of strangers. I believe that much of her changing has been learned by watching the other dogs. What can we do to help her develop into the loving, happy dog she can sometimes be?

I have a 1yr old maltese and he tries to bite everyone that comes near him. Including the groomer and the vet. How can I break this problem? I tried squirting water at him. But he seems to like it and starts licking his tongue out for it. I just want him to be friendly. He’s too cute to be so mean. He also has a barking and a whining problem. What should I do?

Debra,
I could have written your exact post about our 1 year old Yorkie. We recently found an awesome trainer who follows the same principles as Cesar Millan. She’s working with our family to rehab. our little “Yorkshire Terrorist.” Her company is called SmartCritters. Good luck!

I rescued a 1 year old dog about 8 months ago. Odie is such a joy to have and has quickly become the love of my life. My problems began when I tried to trim his nails, wash his feet, or trim the hair between his toes. Odie begins to growl and has recently began to snap at my hand. I am so scared that he is going to bite someone and I have no idea what to do. I love him and just want him to be safe and happy.

Gayla… sounds like your dog is not getting to burn off enough energy. How often are you walking her?

Kristen…. put your dog up on a table and get someone to talk and pet it while you are doing the trimming. They are not as aggresive if they are up high… they loose their control.

Now, you guys. All any of these dogs need are basic obedience classes. Dogs don’t know how to behave unless YOU train them with patience, persistence and consistency.
Check out www.ironcladk9.com for classes and top notch training with top notch instructors.
Ceaser rightly focuses on rescue and hardship cases. Y’all’s questions and problems really are common and easily fixed when you get a little help and know what to do.
Ceaser does have good ideas as does Victoria Stillwell from It’s Me or the Dog.

ralph, the best thing to do for your dog that seems scared of every noise is to get the dog acclimated to all types of noises. Walking the dog where there’s lots of traffic etc. will help. I have 2 dobermans and one of the first things I did was start walking them at 10 weeks old in high traffic areas where they started getting used to the different sounds. Your dog just needs some confidence right now.

Melody, you need to let all 3 dogs know who the pack leader is which is yourself. Once you establish that they’ll start to understand where they stand in the pecking order.

I have two Labrador mixes and two cats and all are wonderful. We have watched Cesar closely over the years and read Cesar’s Way and it works. You just have to be consistent.
That’s the key! Consistency. If you want them off the couch, then they must always be off. If you don’t want them to jump, then you must intervene and correct every time it happens, not just when you get really embarrassed.

We have 2 dogs (Golden Retriever mix and a Cairn Terrier) Our main problem is with the Golden. His name is Buddy and if he can get out the door he is GONE. My son rescued him from the Gwinnett Animal Shelter about 4 yrs ago. He was told that Buddy was guessed to be 5 months old. If Buddy isn’t on the leash he runs away. He loves my husband to death and is very loyal to him and also to me. He is a very gentle loving dog so we can’t understand why he wants to run away. Our Cairn is Molly and she barks like crazy if an animal comes on TV. She has taught Buddy to watch TV also and they see when an animal is on. They run up to the TV. We bought a TV we could put up on the wall so Buddy doesn’t break the screen and get hurt. Any suggestions for both of our problems??

My 9 year old golden retriever mix was never interested getting a treat while we went for a walk and she does NOT “snap out” of it if I “touched/kicked” her when she got out of control. She is uncontrollable if she sees another dog and goes crazy. I’ve tried every trick and nothing worked. Now I can’t stay calm anymore and as soon as I see a dog my heart starts racing. Like Ceasar said: He trains people not dogs, but I am just to scared now to go for a walk with her :(.

This really only works if the dog is not too aroused, and it sounds like your dog gets highly aroused when she sees other dogs. This isn’t abnormal, but you do need to get it under control.
Many dogs are like this because they have little or no exposure to other dogs in positive settings, including supervised off-leash play (i.e., doggy daycare or a training class with proper socialization). They are also like this if they have not had the right kind of training.
I’ve tried every trick and nothing worked.
Have you hired a professional trainer? It doesn’t have to be Cesar; just someone who has experience with this, and will be able to find a tool or method to help you. Ask your friends or your vet for referrals.
I like Cesar for the most part, but what I don’t like about him is that he makes it look easy, and it isn’t always easy. Most dog behavior problems take longer than an hourlong TV show’s worth of time to fix. Also, TV is highly edited, so it looks like “magic.” But dog training is not magic. It is work, and what works for one dog will not always work for another.
Plus, if you get nervous every time you see another dog while on a walk, your dog is feeding off your energy, and thinks that he needs to “do something” about the other dog. Once you have the tools and methods to help you train him, you will be able to be calm and assertive, and he can feed off of that, instead.
Good luck!

I am raising a 8 month old Husky/Lab mix. She has been an excellent puppy but is quite submissive when meeting new dogs and people. She will tend to pee a little as she approaches them. She also likes to bark when she wants attention even after long walks.

Most of the posters here could watch the show, understand the principals behind them, and, cure their own dogs ills without extra help.
I had to do this over the last year as we took in 5 strays who wondered into the subdivision and Cesar’s lessons worked great. Chasing cats, marking, destructive behavior, charging doors, jumping up on anything, dominant food aggression…..all cured. We now have 5 well behaved, house-broken, exercised, 55-65lbs. dogs living in the house as one pack and it’s a joy every day having them around. Best thing is, the same energy I use for one dog works for all five, and for every situation.
Pay attention, listen, learn, and stop thinking as a human….dogs don’t think, they simply react, as instincts and conditioning dictate they do, to their environment.

I agree with Hippy.
I have cured many issues with my pitbull and Husky over the last few years thanks to watching Cesar and grasping his techniques for instilling structure into my dogs life in a way that THEY understand.
It can be done.

We adopted a 2 year old Jack Russell terrier about 3 months ago. She came from a family who claim that the reason for her being re-homed was her inability to not get along with their 4 year old child. We think she is about the perfect dog EXCEPT that she is very intolerant of other indoor dogs. When we go visit friends who have indoor dogs (male, female, neutered etc.), Tink just goes balistic and would attack them if given the chance. So we have taken turns with the guest dogs, giving the dogs kennel time so they are not out loose together in the house. Outside with outdoor dogs at the same location, she is fine–she just goes about her business and ignores them. She is an “only” dog in our home and both of us have had other dogs in at other times and have not had this problem. Any advice?
Many thanks.

I have this dog we found at a shelter. He is the best dog I ever had!!!! He immediately became attached to me, but only me. When we “saved/adopted” him, one of the shelter vets there told us he was diagnosed with separation anxiety disorder. We can leave him alone for 10 minutes, come back in the house, and look at him, he is going nuts like we have been gone all day. Is there any way I can fix this? This is the ONLY problem we have with him. He is to everyone else who meets him, the perfect dog!

I’m an avid watcher of the Dog Whisperer and wonder how much a visit from Cesar would cost. I see that he travels all over the country and he’s based in California. If he came to New Jersey, do I have to pay his air fare or car expenses? That would be quite an expense for the average family. Also, does he charge per day or session with a dog?I’m thinking big bucks are involved, and while I respect getting an expert such as he, I have to remember I’m a senior citizen and live on a (very) fixed income. So - my question is is Cesar far too expensive? Thank you very much for your reply

I read the comment of Robin S. How sad that someone who obviously doesn’t watch anything that Mr Millan does (on his show) before making some bashing remarks. There are a lot of people out there who are not happy unless they’re unhappy. Evidently Robin S. is one of them. If you don’t like him dear heart, then don’t watch him, but spare us your negative remarks. You obviously don’t know much about this gentleman. If he truly were a “Hollywood wannabee” do you seriously think he wouldn’t be there by now? Grow up madam and stop being so negative, live goes on - and you will no doubt be ignored, as will your comments. Have an awesome day, and I hope you have a dog in your life.

RobinS, Cesar Millan is a brilliant dog trainer. He didnt start out with very much, but observed how dogs in the wild act and behaviour. By doing this, he has come to understand how dogs interact with eachother and therefore how we can control them by being dominant and assertive.

Aloha Cesar, We have a very awful situation happening here in Hawaii. It is called Senate Bill #79 which the owner of a PIT BULL/AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER will be charged with a misdeameanor for owning, selling or breeding of either of these breeds. I was hoping that you might be able to respond through e-mail to our state senate on your experience and knowledge of this breed. Since this breed is close to your heart I thought your input would be quite helpful and truly appreciated. I am not an owner of either of these breeds but I do know that it is not necessarily the breed but the Owner/Handler/Human that creates the results. I know you are a busy individual but this is an injustice to discriminate against a breed and your assistance in this matter I feel would be so helpful and informative. Mahalo plenty and Aloha, Jan MacMillan

I have 1 year old husky mix who has recently taken up running away, whenever possible. If my little girl opens the door she is gone. She has a fenced in back yard is taken for regular walks. and is spayed. She comes when she is on a leash or in the backyard. Or if we drive around to find her. But not if she is in the front yard not on a leash. When she leaves she takes our other dog with her, who doesnt typically run away.
She has gotten picked up by the dog warden. a handful of times as far as 2 towns away. She is really friendly. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. She is a great animal, was easily housetrained and is very intelligent, and great with the family. She just loves to run all of the time.
any advice would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi Lynn,
Your Husky mix is bored. She needs a high energy playmate to play with all day to tire her out.
Also, Husky’s are known for this and hopefully as she gets older with a friend, she will settle down.
Cesar Millan would tell you to walk your husky daily and to have it wear a pack to get a better workout and to boost its self esteem by doing a job for you…the leader. It would help your dog build respect for you too.
